Body: Subject: Position Available: Coordinator of Second Language Assessment Projects Please Post/Circulate Position Available Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition University of Minnesota Coordinator of Second Language Assessment Projects The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota is seeking a Coordinator of Second Language Assessments Projects funded by Title VI Language Resource Center funds and other federally- and state-funded foreign language and English as a Second Language assessment projects. Appointment: Full-time professional/academic position. This is a one-year, renewable appointment based on availability of funding. Preferred start date is September 1, 2003 or as soon as possible. Duties: * Coordinate the development of proficiency-based foreign/second language assessment instruments including including task and item development, field-testing, data collection, development and refinement of rating criteria and scales, analysis and interpretation of results, and coordination of test revision. * Supervise and contribute to the development of web-based classroom assessment frameworks and tools for CARLA's Virtual Assessment Center (VAC). Includes creation of interactive tasks for the professional development modules of the VAC. * Create and lead training workshops and summer institutes on developing proficiency-oriented language assessments. * Create professional development materials for teachers for use in workshops and institutes and to post on the web. * Work closely with Assessment Program Associate in all aspects of assessment. * Provide support to teachers participating in CARLA-related assessment projects * Evaluate student performance on CARLA's assessment products and coordinate reporting of results/findings to field-testing participants. * Lead dissemination efforts of CARLA's assessment products and findings through conference presentations, articles, and press releases. * Write reports on the progress of assessment development efforts for federal and internal reporting purposes. * Act as a resource on assessment issues for the language teaching community both within and outside the University. Essential Qualifications: * Experience with foreign language test design, development, and analysis. * Masters' degree or A.B.D. in a field related to foreign language education, foreign language assessment, or second-language acquisition. * Functional competence in one or more foreign languages. * Proficiency with technology. * Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, work with teachers, and work as part of a team. Desired Qualifications: *Experience/proficiency in creating assessment tools using technology. Salary: $35,000 minimum. Seventh Street, Bloomington IN 47405 (812) 856-1230; fax: (812) 856-1206; e-mail: pmarsh@indiana.edu ****************************************** Director of Language Curriculum Development, Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region, Indiana University (pending position approval) Position Available: The Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR), a government-funded center based at Indiana University, is currently seeking a full-time experienced specialist in materials development and proficiency-based language teaching to direct its curricular development program for Central Asian languages from August 2003 to July 2006 (pending renewable funding). The Center, with major support from a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Language Resource Center grant, is developing introductory and intermediate materials for five languages. Currently, work has begun on two languages, Pashto (Afghanistan and Pakistan) and Uyghur (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China). In 2003-04, curriculum development for Tajik and Uzbek will begin; in 2004-05,curriculum development for Turkmen will be added. The position is at the rank of Academic Specialist (non-tenured). Requirements and Responsibilities: The successful applicant should have a Masters degree, or preferably a Ph.D., in applied linguistics or a closely related discipline. The candidate should have extensive experience working with less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) and have intermediate language ability in one of these. The specialist must be experienced in designing curricular materials for LCTLs, be familiar with task-based, proficiency-based, and communicative approaches to materials design, and be able to conduct workshops on a range of topics in curriculum development and language pedagogy for center staff. He or she will provide overall direction and supervision for each of the Center's five curriculum development language projects noted above. Center staff includes native-speaking language developers for each language, curriculum development and computer assisted language learning (CALL) specialists, and programming staff. The goal of each language project is to produce proficiency-oriented course materials for beginning and intermediate levels of language instruction, in print and electronic (CD-ROM, Web) form, and to teach these languages during the eight-week intensive summer language institutes held annually in Bloomington. Title: River of Dreams River Rafting Trip
Body: Seeking Native Artisans and Participants River of Dreams is looking for participants to take part in a river-rafting trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. River of Dreams will facilitate the participation of 10-16 persons with disabilities who are Native American or represent other minority cultures. Their family members or friends will be encouraged to participate to ensure an inclusive experience. In addition, River of Dreams is actively seeking people from the Native American community to serve as storytellers, artisans, and historians to facilitate and encourage trip participants to share their stories, arts, and culture. Call for stipend information. This project is a landmark effort highlighting individuals who are traditionally underrepresented in recreational programs.
