Born Carly Born graduated from the Monterey Institute of International Studies with a M.A. in Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language, a Certificate in Language Program Administration and a specialization in CALL. She is currently the Academic Computing Coordinator for Foreign Languages at Carleton College. In this role, she is responsible for providing both technical support and curricular development support to the language and literature faculty as it relates to technology. Short description of the presentation If you had any technology you could think of at your fingertips, would you really use it? How would it impact your teaching? How would it impact the way your students learn? What is the price for having so much technology at your fingertips, both financially and pedagogically? Carleton College, with funding from a generous grant from the Mellon Foundation, built a new building to house its language faculty, state-of-the-art technology classrooms and Language Center. This presentation by IT support staff and language faculty will discuss the design and planning process that involved language faculty, IT staff and students, and the impact it has had on the faculty and students who have been using it for 2 years since its opening. We will feature faculty reflections on how using the new classrooms has changed (or not changed) their teaching, and whether or not that change has been for the good. We will also discuss the IT support model used at Carleton that has been instrumental in the success of this project. What is going to happen? Body: The Department of Linguistics invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor/Lecturer to assist with our graduate and undergraduate teacher education program. Candidates must have a doctoral degree or A.B.D. in linguistics or a related field; experience in ESL teaching; experience in teaching at the p-12 level or in teacher education at this level; and experience in pre-service or in-service teacher education. Desirable qualifications include NY State ESL certification or the equivalent; research experience in a field related to ESL teaching; knowledge of accreditation procedures and assessment; and experience in student teacher supervision. Responsibilities will include teaching two courses per semester (such as Methods of TESOL, Second Language Acquisition, Bilingualism, and Student Teaching Seminar), and may include supervision of student teachers in the public schools. The term of appointment will be for one year beginning Fall 2003, with a possibility of renewal.
