The task force is aimed as a first step in better recognition and more effective development of heritage language communities. Maryland hopes that this report will increase the utilization of bilingual skills of residents in Maryland and the DC area, and serve as a guide for other states that may not have access to their heritage language communities. arrow To read the full contents of the report, download it from http://tinyurl.com/cuq6pj .

Title: German Jazz and Pop Tips
Body: From http://www.germany.info What is German music? When you think of it, do you hear strains of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms or Mendelssohn, or the omm-pah-pah of a blaskappelle in a beerhall? Good - you're right on track...but there is so much more! In this weekly column we will try to cover everything in between, because from pop to world music to hip-hop and jazz, German artists are at the cutting edge of more genres than there are names for. Title: Activity Idea: Day Before Spring Break Challenge
Body: A Latinteach listserv user recently described the following activity: I wanted to share an activity that I do that works out very well for my students. I am the only Latin teacher, so I teach all the levels so its a nice break for all of my classes to be doing the same thing. My school also does not allow any homework to be assigned over breaks. To combat this I have the "Day Before Spring Break Challenge". Every year I pick a myth and a medium i.e. Jason and a children's book, Theseus and a story board, Sisyphus and a finger paint mural. Two days before- I assign a myth and explain the challenge. The day before spring break the students, hopefully having looked up the myth, act as a class and compete against the other classes. They must organize themselves in order to complete the assignment as a class. Then at the end of the day I display the 6 projects that the classes made and about 5 or 6 teachers come and "judge" the projects. They judge them on how clearly the story is presented, how creative the project is and a few other things that change depending on the medium. The each class votes on what baked good they would like for me to bring in and the winning class comes back to the cookies or cupcakes (whatever they picked). I don't assign a grade for it, so the students that leave early just miss out on the fun. But the students are definitely learning the myth and how to work together. St. Cyr, E.
