Title: Activity Idea for Advanced Classes: Text Messaging in Spanish
Body: A More TPRS listserv user forwarded on the following suggestion from an Spanish AP listserv user: The most popular article last year was one about text messaging by Jorge Ramos. You can find it at: http://jorgeramos.com/articulos/articulos396.htm I especially like Ramos because I think that his writing style is fairly easy for American English speakers to understand and they need to at least know who he is and his importance in the Spanish lang media here in the US. Each year when I use one of his articles, we start with a pre-reading video clip of Ramos anchoring an Univision new segment. I show them some of his books, his website, etc. Part of this reading assignment was to figure out what the text abbreviations stood for. Part of the quiz was for the student to write the abbreviations for the words I listed. Finally, the kids all had to bring cell phones to class and text each other or friends in my other classes, in Spanish, of course. The school has a strict policy about no cell phones in class, so that activity was a big hit. I loaned my own phone to the kid in each class who didn't have one. In one class, after we finished, I had put the phone in my pocket without much thought and didn't turn it off. One funny guy called me during the next activity. The kids thought it was hilarious for the teacher's phone to interrupt the class. En fin, we had a lot of fun, and I heard for a week after about kids continuing to text each other in Spanish. From Ramos, L. Forwarded by Greany, H. [moretprs] Good idea from Spanish AP list. MoreTPRS listserv (moretprs@yahoogroups.com, 15 Aug 2007).
