Title: Workshop on Second Language Acquisition and Spatial Language
Body: From http://www.cocolab.org/esla Workshop on Second Language Acquisition and Spatial Language 10th September, 2007 Newcastle Civic Centre, Newcastle, UK Spatial language, such as asking directions for places in large scale space, or asking where a misplaced object is in small scale space, constitutes part of the basic fabric of language. Research into spatial language has recently been a hotbed of activity, including much work showing that languages vary greatly in how they carve up space. Furthermore, it is often noted by researchers and practitioners in second language learning that spatial language, and spatial adpositions in particular, present a particular challenge for the second language learner. The focus of this workshop will be to bring together work on SLA and spatial language with a view to characterizing the processes and constraints that affect the acquisition of L2 in this important domain. For more information, visit http://www.cocolab.org/esla .

Title: Part-time Job: Rating English Speaking Tests for ACTFL
Body: From http://jobcentral.actfl.org/jobdetail.cfm?job=2524488&keywords=&ref=1 If you are a language teacher, tutor, graduate student, writer, copy editor, translator, or experienced in a related language field, and are interested in earning extra income through part-time work that can be done from your home in your free time - then becoming an OPIc Rater may be of interest to you. To become an ACTFL OPIc Rater you will need to attend TWO 2-day training sessions. The first training, Phase I, will familiarize you with the ACTFL oral proficiency testing and rating protocols. The Phase II training will focus on the OPIc, the OPIc test forms and OPIc rating. The trainings take place in White Plains, NY. OPIc Raters need to commit to an average of 15-20 hours per week. Rating volume will not be steady – we anticipate testing surges during the second and third weeks of the month. OPIc Raters access speech samples and submit ratings via an online rater site. Because OPIc rating is done via an online rater interface, ratings can be done any day of the week, and at any time of the day or night. OPIc Raters are paid on a per test basis ($10/test). OPIc Raters average approximately 4 tests per hour. For more information about this job, go to http://jobcentral.actfl.org/jobdetail.cfm?job=2524488&keywords=&ref=1 .

Title: Article: Parents Want Their Children to Be Multilingual
Body: From http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070806/NEWS0102/708060303/1058/NEWS01 Learn another way to speak BY BEN FISCHER August 6, 2007 Do you want your young child to learn another language? If you do, you're part of a broad trend among middle-class parents, said Anne Golden, a Xavier University language professor and director of the university's corporate language training programs. "So many people hang their heads if I ask them if they speak a foreign language," Golden said. " ... But they say, 'I want my kids to.'" But don't expect your son or daughter to get that instruction at school. Despite the increasing demand, foreign language instruction before seventh or eighth grade remains sparse, available in less than one-third of U.S. elementary schools, according to the Center for Applied Linguistics. However, there are plenty of options outside of schools. Read the entire article, which discusses several extra-curricular language learning options for kids, at http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070806/NEWS0102/708060303/1058/NEWS01 .
