TitleBill Introduced to Expand Adult ESL Services

Rep. Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee's Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning and Competitiveness, has introduced H.R. 2214 to greatly enhance adult education and ESL services, and is looking for co-sponsors in Congress. Called the Adults Achieving the American Dream Act, this legislation will:

*Increase the authorization for programs under the Adult and Family Literacy Act to $1.2 billion by fiscal year 2013
*Authorize the set-aside for integrated English literacy and civics programs in the Adult and Family Literacy Act
*Increase the authorization for Even Start Family Literacy programs to $500 million
*Dedicate a research and development center to adult education and literacy at the Institute for Education Sciences
*Offer tax incentives to employers who offer adult education and ESL programs to their employees.
