Title: Book Review: Language Learners in Study Abroad Contexts
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-2191.html#1 Title: Language Learners in Study Abroad Contexts Editors: Margaret A. DuFon, Eton Churchill Publisher: Multilingual Matters Year: 2006 Lisa DeWaard Dykstra, unaffiliated scholar Study abroad has long been accepted as inherently good for foreign and second language students in that it is thought to provide rich linguistic and cultural input. In this edited volume, study abroad is examined critically to determine whether it provides the benefits it is thought to offer. The book begins with a thorough overview of previous literature on study abroad. The remainder is devoted to individual research articles on four main topics: the acquisition of pragmatic competence, dinner table interactions and socialization, the effects of study abroad settings on language learning, and the influence of individual and program variables on second language acquisition. The contributions span a variety of research orientations and designs. Below I describe each briefly before turning to a critical commentary on the volume. Title: Book Review: Bad English
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-2210.html#1 AUTHOR: Battistella, Edwin L. TITLE: Bad Language PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press YEAR: 2005 REVIEWER: Simo K. Määttä, Department of Languages and Translation Studies, University of Tampere, Finland This book provides an overview of the history and current issues related to ''Bad English,'' i.e., the complex question of whether certain varieties and usages of the English language are inherently bad. The author adopts a ''realist position'' which acknowledges the importance of standard language as the basis of the social history of English and emphasizes the fact that educated people should understand this history, including the relations between dialects, styles, and different languages. This position also stresses the undeniable value of language norms and traditions while at the same time acknowledging the role played by variation and innovation in the evolution of language. The starting point is the fact that ''badness'' in language is a phenomenon much more complex than generally admitted; the core of the realist position resides in the understanding of the role of linguistic variation and the constructed nature of the standard (21-22). Indeed, the realist position is aimed at occupying the space between the descriptive (notably linguistics) and prescriptive viewpoints (9, 20). Bad Language focuses on American English and the linguistic situation of the United States (indeed, Bad English might have been a more appropriate title for international distribution). It explains concepts difficult to grasp in plain yet sophisticated language and with numerous examples; in addition, the phenomena under scrutiny are discussed not only in terms of the current state of the arts but also with a detailed, documented historical overview. The book thus provides valuable insights for scholars and laypersons alike. Read the complete review at http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-2210.html#1 .

Title: Books for 11-Year-Old Readers
Body: A recent request on the AATG listserv for recommended books for an enthusiastic 11-year-old reader of German received the following suggestions. ---- He might enjoy a series of books put out by Rowohlt [RoRoRo], by Emer O'Sullivan and Dietmar Rösler. It's about 2 young people whose parents, 1 from Germany and 1 from Ireland, have made a blended family. The whole book is partly in German and partly in English and very understandable. They form sentences in ways that you understand what's being said with a limited amount of German. They're kind of adventure stories and I think quite enjoyable. Some titles I know are “It could be worse - oder?”, “Mensch, be careful!” and “I like you - und du?” These say "ab 13". Slosser, M. Re: [AATG-L] Books for an 11-year-old avid reader. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (2 Aug. 2006). ---- Try Alphabet Garten. They have readers for all levels. Sarah is most knowledgeable and accommodating. Her site is http://www.alphabet-garten.com . Schaefer, G. Re: [AATG-L] Books for an 11-year-old avid reader. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (2 Aug. 2006). ---- One of the latest young reader series in Germany comes with movies: “Die wilden Fussballkerle". If he watches the films and then reads the books (so far 13 are out, three more are being written), he will see the same vocab and patterns over and over again. It's the adventures of a soccer gang of mainly 9 year olds, each book told by another one of the team. The movies (1 and 2 can be purchased, I think 3 has also been released) summarize the books, use the same easy, yet nicely literary language. You can also buy the books on tape! I bought mine in a German bookstore (www.weiland.de) and they would have even sent them to me. Boer, S. Re: [AATG-L] Books for an 11-year-old avid reader. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (4 Aug. 2006). ---- I suggest Otfried Preussler "Krabat", this is one classic. Long before Harry Potter, but deals with magic and mystery. Beautifully written. Also the series "Der kleine Nick" is great for avid readers. I had very good experiences with them. Peltner, A. Re: [AATG-L] Books for an 11-year-old avid reader. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (4 Aug. 2006). ---- "Krabat", the story of the boy who goes to the Black Miller and becomes a Zauberlehrling, is an ancient Faust-type legend of the Wends (Sorbs), the Slavic Germans between Bautzen and Cottbus, --probably their best known legend. Lots of info via Google, try www.krabatregion.de for openers. Wilson, J. Re: [AATG-L] Books for an 11-year-old avid reader. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (5 Aug. 2006).

Title: Texts for Adult Spanish Learners
Body: I will be teaching beginning adult learners for the third time this fall. My first time around I used the recommended text, "Spanish is Fun." I do NOT recommend it; it makes Spanish dull, though there are some parts that I would perhaps copy and include in an ancillary packet. The second text that I would thoroughly recommend is Mosaicos, published by Prentice Hall. This was for a Spanish 101 course (considered to be the equivalent of 2 years high school Spanish), so it advances rather quickly but contains a good number of reading, writing and speaking activities. This fall I will be teaching a Conversational Spanish class and will be using Invitaciones, published by Vista Higher Learning. Here's the link: http://www.vistahigherlearning.com/catalog/invitaciones I like it because everything is contained in one text; there is no secondary workbook to keep flipping back to when students are practicing a particular grammar or vocab point. Also, the communicative activities are wonderful; they include a "Student 1/ Student 2"-type set up where one page is upside down, allowing two students to partner with one book and complete a speaking activity that uses graphics, maps, etc. Also helpful is the "soap opera-ish" video, which integrates vocab and grammar from each lesson. Very well done. Just my two cents. Carillo, H.K. Re: textbook for beginning adult learners of Spanish. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (26 July 2006).
