Title: Tips for Parents and Students
Body: In a recent discussion on the FLTEACH listserv of how parents of foreign language students can help their children succeed, the following Web site and homework tip were posted. These suggestions may be useful for learners of any age who are unsure of how to study on their own or with others. HOW TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE http://www.themaxfacts.com/shareddocs/studytips.html ---- I've told parents that they don't have to know the Spanish language in order to be able to help their children. In order to review grammar, the parent can say the word in English and have the child give them the word in Spanish. The parent should be able to tell immediately whether or not the child knows that vocab word. Also, I've told the parents to have their children try to explain the grammar concepts to them; after all, in order to be able to explain something, you must "own" it first. Kotecki, J. Title: Free Basic Spanish Course Online
Body: From http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/lj/user_guide.shtml Spanish Steps will introduce you to simple, spoken Spanish language. The language you'll learn will help you to find your way, order meals, introduce yourself, etc and to understand predictable things that people will say to you. The course is made up of 24 short steps or units: Taking a taxi ride, Checking into a hotel, etc. These are organized into 6 sections: Finding your feet, Night out, etc. We'd recommend that you follow them in sequence, though you can just dip into the individual ones. Spanish Steps has been devised to be used in short sessions that you can fit around your own schedule, whenever and for however long it suits you. Frequent, short visits will also help you fix the language in your memory. For more information, visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/lj/index.shtml .

Title: Resources for Teaching about German Festivals
Body: Here are some ideas for preparing hands-on activities about German holidays. If you're looking for decorating advice for your classroom or if you want to get your students involved, you may find some helpful tips here. German Festivals and Celebrations http://www.billanookps.vic.edu.au/German/Resi.htm ---- I have really enjoyed having this site as a resource. Since I am "craft disabled", it is a relief to me to be able to do the crafts she has. I have used her crafts with my exploratory classes. The instructions are easy to give (in German), the projects can be done in a class period, and they make nice classroom decorations or presents for Mom. I make her star craft at Christmas time. It's a big hit with the students. I enlarge the stars to make different sizes. Leu, B. [AATG-L] Resi Schwarzbauer's German Festival site. American Association of Teachers of German listserv.
