Title: Funding Opportunity: Fulbright Scholar Program
Body: Fulbright Scholar Program for US Faculty and Professionals August 1, 2006 is the application deadline for traditional Fulbright Scholar grants worldwide. The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering 26 lecturing, research or combined lecturing/research awards in TEFL or Applied Linguistics during the 2007-2008 academic year. Faculty and professionals in TEFL or Applied Linguistics may apply not only for awards specifically in their field, but also for one of the many “All Discipline” awards open to any field. Every year 800 U.S. Fulbright Scholars in 150 countries and all regions of the world enjoy an experience of a lifetime, one that provides a broad cultural perspective on their academic disciplines and connects them with colleagues at institutions around the globe. Awards range from two months to an academic year. Grants are awarded to faculty of all academic ranks, including adjunct and emeritus. In most countries lecturing is in English, though awards in Latin America, Francophone Africa, and the Middle East may require proficiency in another language. U.S. citizenship is required. Title: Book Review: Progressives, Patterns, Pedagogy
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-2153.html TITLE: Progressives, Patterns, Pedagogy AUTHOR: Römer, Ute Britta Schneider, The Language Centre of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland Progressives, Patterns, Pedagogy, by Ute Römer, is the first corpus-driven comparative study of progressives occurring in the speech of native English speakers and textbooks used for the instruction of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in German secondary schools. The study is based on careful analysis of more than 10,000 progressive forms of spoken British English taken from the British National Corpus and The Bank of English, and from a small corpus, compiled by the author herself, of progressive forms occurring in German EFL textbooks. The purpose of the book, is (i) to highlight differences between actual language use and textbook language with regard to the distribution of progressives, their preferred contexts, functions, and typical lexical-grammatical patterns, and (ii) to elaborate a concept for teaching progressives while accounting for the three main criteria in language pedagogy: typicality, authenticity, and communicative utility.
