Title: Recommended Site for French Discussion Practice
Body: At the AP level, students are supposed to be able to read short articles on current events and discuss them in French. One Web site I like is Scoop by DeMarque. If your school has Inspiration, I really recommend it because it gives you stories on current events and a template that use Inspiration to help facilitate discussion and critical thinking in French. (I used it differently for level 1 and level 2 purposes.) This would be good for vocabulary acquisition. http://scoop.demarque.com Levasseur, M. Re: AP French language vocabulary. Title: New Edition: Non-Native Language Teachers
Body: From http://tinyurl.com/oac92 Non-Native Language Teachers Perceptions, Challenges and Contributions to the Profession Series: Educational Linguistics , Vol. 5 Llurda, Enric (Ed.) Non-native language teachers have often been viewed as an unavoidable fate of the profession, rather than an asset worth exploring and investigating. Now that non-natives are increasingly found teaching languages, and particularly English, both in ESL and EFL contexts, the identification of their specific contributions and their main strengths has become more relevant than ever. As a result, there has recently been a surge of interest in the role of non-native teachers but little empirical research has been published so far. This volume is particularly rich in providing different approaches to the study of non-native teachers: NNS teachers as seen by students, teachers, graduate supervisors, and by themselves. It also contributes little explored perspectives, like classroom discourse analysis, or a social-psychological framework to discuss conceptions of NNS teachers. Title: Ideas for Redecorating Your Lab or Classroom
Body: Everyone loves the traditional maps, flags, and travel posters, but if you’re looking for a fresh new look for your lab or classroom, the suggestions below might give you some ideas. This week's ideas involve students and staff in the redesign process. Look for more of these in the coming weeks. ---- Three years ago, one teacher had some art students draw and paint a section of wall outside of his classroom -- about 7 feet in width -- with what might be termed a collage. The teacher who came to the same class room when Georges left, has, just this year, had art students begin sketching scenes in the area above the room's bulletin boards, as well as on the walls having no such boards. Some of the same students, as well as new ones who are also enrolled in art, will complete these pieces of art during the coming year. I imagine that even if there aren't enough of your students who are artists, you might be able to engage the art department in this work. L. Re: Decorating my classroom. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (17 June 2006). ---- Why not use that overhead to reproduce a Picasso or Dali on the wall or any famous works of art in the subject area? Some art students could help you for credit from their teacher. Our art teacher has the students do drawings (I have thought of this with fine art) and they are used to cover the big suspended ceiling tiles. It's cool to walk in there and look up. A year ago I had my JH students make the flags from the Spanish-speaking world. I laminated them and hung them around the ceiling this past year. That was the only way I could afford a set of these flags and the kids were proud of them when they had me in HS this year. Brochin, P. Re: Decorating my classroom. Title: Using 'Friends' in Class
Body: In reference to the request for a good “Friends” episode to teach from, I've used "The One With Joey's Porsche" and found it to have adequately clean language and very little sexual overtone, which can be difficult to avoid with this show. Because this show was/is so popular, the students had a good time reading the parts and it provided excellent practice with casual speech/vocabulary, intonations and conversational skills. The link below will take you directly to this episode's transcripts. http://members.lycos.nl/frtrtk/transcripts/html/0605.html Ricker, N. Friends episodes.
