Title: Book Review: Spoken English, Applied Linguistics and TESOL
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-1588.html Spoken English, Applied Linguistics and TESOL EDITOR: Hughes, Rebecca TITLE: Spoken English, TESOL, and Applied Linguistics SUBTITLE: Challenges for Theory and Practice PUBLISHER: Palgrave Macmillan YEAR: 2006 Peter Clements, Graduate School of International Relations, International University of Japan, Japan This volume brings together work by linguists and applied linguists working primarily in North America and the British Isles, though Hong Kong, Singapore, and Finland are also represented. As implied in the title, the collection aims on the one hand to discuss a range of theoretical issues raised by recent empirical research into spoken English, and, on the other, to examine some of the implications of this work for English language teaching (ELT). Many of the contributions thus make explicit reference to data, whether by reviewing research, presenting samples of actual spoken language, or both, while at the same time offering proposals for and critical discussion of pedagogical practice. Read the complete review at http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-1588.html . Read more about the book at http://www.palgrave.com/products/Catalogue.aspx?is=1403936323 .

Title: Summer Reading Ideas: Recommended Books about Teaching
Body: If you're looking for more fun and less academic fare, take a look at these recent recommendations from the TESL listserv. From http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0521847605/ref=pe_snp_605/104-5266433-3557532?n=283155 The Experience of Language Teaching by Rose Senior, Michael Swan Through the words of more than 100 practising language teachers, The Experience of Language Teaching provides a detailed picture of teaching and learning in communicative classrooms. Using a teacher-generated framework it covers a range of aspects of classroom life: how teachers create environments suitable for language practice, how they get students 'on-side', how they manage tricky students, how they enhance the learning experience, how they develop and maintain a spirit of community. The book demonstrates how paying attention to both the learning and social needs of their class groups enables language teachers to behave in flexible ways that promote learning. This book will be of interest to teachers, teacher educators, researchers and to anyone interested in finding out what it is like to be a language teacher at the present time. ---- One book which has not been mentioned is Leo Rosten's "The Education of Hyman Kaplan". This is a minor classic of (fictional) humour. It concerns an immigrant to the US from a country of indeterminate, perhaps central European origin, who, through ingenuosity (or should that be ingenuousness?) foils his English teacher at every turn. Current practicioners will recognise themselves, I am sure, in some chapters. Those who are considering entering this profession will understand that there is both drudgery and high humour in a job that has not ceased to entertain me in 25 years. I would do nothing else (and I will also never grow rich!). Graham, A. Books about 'being' a teacher. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (21 Feb. 2006). ---- I'd like to recommend "Learning to Bow" by Bruce Feiler. It's about the author's experience teaching in a junior high school in Japan. Japanese students love it because it incorporates what he learns about Japanese schools along with some of the things he tries to do in the Japanese classroom. It's a very readable book. Sadow, C. Books about 'being' a teacher. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (21 Feb. 2006).

Title: Online Materials: Globalization 101
Body: Globalization101.org is an objective online resource to teach high school & college students about policy aspects of globalization related to civics, economics, geography and history, without any fees or charges. Globalization101.org provides unbiased, easily understandable information and related lesson plans to teach about cross-disciplinary subjects such as international trade, world - wide health and environmental issues and global technological changes. The site includes 11 in-depth issue briefs, more than 70 news analyses, teachers' resource section (with lesson plans and alignments to state standards), video interviews and a useful links section. We have just recently uploaded a Spanish-language translation of the Culture Issue Brief: http://www.globalization101.org/index.php?file=issue&pass1=mains&id=14 and a Chinese Language translation of the World Bank and IMF Issue Brief: http://www.globalization101.org/index.php?file=static&id=23&PHPSESSID=fbe00dbb598381949bfa024c986a9d59 . Currently, I am interested in receiving your feedback on the Spanish & Chinese translations. We would love to have native speakers, as well as foreign-language students and teachers read the issue brief and provide feedback on level of interest in having a Spanish & Chinese language version of the Globalization101.org website. We are also interested in their opinions of the translation itself: is it accurate, engaging, etc? Would you use this in your classroom? We have a sample feedback form on the site: http://www.globalization101.org/uploads/File/Field-test_G101_Spanish.doc and http://www.globalization101.org/uploads/File/Field-test_G101_Chinese.doc . Feel free to use this form or just to send your own comments and feedback to g101@carnegieendowment.org. Thank you so much for your time and opinions. Your feedback will help give us direction on where to go next and will help our translators with future translations. Weiner, R. Title: New Book: Figurative Thinking and Foreign Language Learning
Body: From http://www.palgrave.com/products/Catalogue.aspx?is=1403996024 Figurative Thinking and Foreign Language Learning Jeannette Littlemore and Graham D. Low Description Many of the vocabulary items that foreign language learners encounter involve figurative extensions of meaning. For example, bottleneck, hard-headed and getting a foot in the door all involve figurative extensions of parts of the body. To understand words and expressions such as these, language learners often need to employ figurative thinking. This book examines the nature of figurative thinking, considers its contribution to communicative language ability, and explores the implications for language teaching and learning.
