Title: Linguistic Minority Research Institute: 2006 Conference
Body: From http://lmri.ucsb.edu/events/06_conf/index.php May 5-6, 2006: "English Learners and Higher Education" Co-sponsored by Arizona State University College of Education The 2006 UC LMRI Conference will focus on English Learners and Higher Education. For English learners to achieve parity with other students, they must have greater access to and success in higher education. Yet English learners are less likely to graduate from high school, attend college, and complete a four-year degree than other students. The 2006 conference will provide a forum for addressing such isses as preparation for college, access to two-year versus four-year colleges, and factors that promote or impede college completion for English learners. Title: New Report: Hidden Literacies and Inquiry Approaches of Bilingual High School Students
Body: From http://wcx.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/23/1/91 Kerry Enright Villalva University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill This article presents findings from case studies of two Latina bilingual high school writers engaged in a year-long research and writing project. Both young women demonstrated unique patterns related to their approaches to inquiry and performance of literacy practices. By using an ecological framework to integrate a multiple literacies perspective into the study, the author argues that both young women engaged in "hidden literacies" that indicated potential toward the development of academic English. The article closes with suggestions for a reframing of common approaches to the study of academic English. Title: More German Music Video Ideas
Body: Here are some more suggested sources and activities for music videos in German. ---- I have my students listen to very old Schlager Music! They love Daffi Deutscher and Wolfgang Petry. I also have students do music videos with raps that they have written! Sometimes they rap and sometimes they sing. It’s always fun! Barnes, K. [AATG-L] Music Videos? American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (17 Jan. 2006). ---- You might want to check out "Zehn " by Farin Urlaub Racing Team. Pretty easy to understand and will get kids jumping. Gremban, K. [AATG-L] Music Videos? American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (17 Jan. 2006). ---- There is a wealth of German music videos at http://www.viva.tv . There are also some song and show clips on http://www.mtv.de (such as "Pimp my Fahrrad," which my students find hilarious).I am wondering if any of you have done projects with music videos. I showed clips of some videos today (I prescreened them for booty/middle fingers, etc.), and was thinking about having my III/IV class do a little research project: discography, biography, images, create a poster, write a fan letter, pull out interesting lyrics to expand vocabulary/teach grammar, stuff like that. Thornton, J. [AATG-L] Music Videos? American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (17 Jan. 2006).
