Body: From: http://www.eastasia.org/jtti.htm Japanese Teacher Training Institute By ALLEX with Portland State University, Oregon June 20 - August 12, 2005 (Four or Eight Week Course Available) The ALLEX Japanese Teacher Training Institute is an intensive course for current teachers of Japanese or those who plan to enter the field. The program provides the foundation for a future instructor to teach Japanese and gives substantial tools to current teachers of Japanese to reinforce and strengthen their programs. Effective methodology in teaching Japanese to North Americans is emphasized over a theoretical analysis of the Japanese language. Financial Aid Limited financial support for tuition is available in the form of scholarships. When scholarships are given they are usually in the amount of $500 - $1, 000 and do not cover housing. Title: Call for Papers: 15th Japanese/Korean Linguistics Conference
Body: The 15th Japanese/Korean Linguistics Conference will be held October 7-9, 2005, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This conference aims to provide a forum for presenting research in Japanese and Korean linguistics, thereby facilitating efforts to deepen our understanding of these two languages, which have striking typological similarities. The invited speakers include Masayoshi Shibatani (Rice University), Patricia Clancy (University of California, Santa Barbara), Yoshiko Matsumoto (Stanford University), and Chung-hey Han (Simon Fraser University). Papers in all sub areas of Japanese and Korean linguistics are invited. Presentations, except for those by the keynote speakers, will be 20 minutes long and will be followed by a 10-minute question and answer period. Please submit abstracts (one page, 500 words maximum) as a PDF file attached to an email message to eall@mailplus.wisc.edu by May 1, 2005. You may use a second page for references and/or example sentences. The first line of your abstract should indicate the category (Formal or Functional), followed by the sub-field (e.g., Formal/Syntax, Functional/Discourse, etc.). The second line should be the paper title. Omit your name and affiliation from the abstract. Body: In 2001, a bill was passed banning the word "squaw" in place names after researchers began to suggest that the word's original meaning was vulgar.
