Title | Tribes and Government Seek to Change "Squaw" Names |
Body | In 2001, a bill was passed banning the word "squaw" in place names after researchers began to suggest that the word's original meaning was vulgar. Less than 8 percent of names containing the word have been changed since then, due partly to disagreement over whether the term is offensive and, if so, what should replace it.
