ELT Playbook Teacher Training
by Sandy Millin
Self-published
ELT Playbook Teacher Training contains a selection of 30 tasks to help trainers to reflect on what they do, centered particularly on areas that seem to cause the most problems for those new to teacher training. These include transitioning from teaching to training, planning training, giving spoken and written feedback after observations, and running workshops and input sessions.

Title: Institute: Developing Academic Literacy and Language in the Content Areas
Body:
Developing Academic Literacy and Language in the Content Areas
October 16-17, 2019
Washington, DC
This institute is based on a 21st century approach to literacy, which includes the incorporation of oral language skills, technology tools, and other modalities.
Participants will explore the academic language and literacy practices –– such as listening for the speaker’s point of view or justifying the answer to a math problem –– that students need to be successful within rigorous content instruction. They will also learn how to scaffold participation in these discipline-specific practices, such as creating a model of the planetary system or contrasting two different cultural versions of a story. Participants will have the opportunity to design activities to bridge from students’ own literacy practices to classroom literacy tasks, including close reading and argumentation. Sample unit plans from social studies, English language arts, and science are used as examples of student tasks related to developing language and literacy in content instruction.
Throughout the two days, activities that teachers can implement in the classroom will be modeled. Strategies are applicable to newcomer students, students with limited or informal education, bilingual learners, as well as students at intermediate and advanced proficiencies in English.
The institute is designed primarily for content and ESL teachers or other school specialists who instruct in the middle grades and high school. Collaborative teaching teams and teacher leaders are especially encouraged to attend.

State Supreme Court Ruling Favors Hawaiian Language Classes
Hawaii Supreme Court rules state constitution requires reasonable access to Hawaiian language immersion programs.
August 14, 2019
HONOLULU (AP) — The state Supreme Court has ruled Hawaii's constitution requires reasonable access to Hawaiian language immersion programs.
Hawaii News Now reported Tuesday that the justices ruled the programs are a necessary component in restoring the Hawaiian language and ultimately the culture.
The case brought by the parent of two schoolchildren on Lanai says the island's only public school did not offer a Hawaiian language immersion program.
The court ruled 3-to-2 that access to a Hawaiian language class only a few times per week was not sufficient.
The ruling says steps must be taken to build an immersion program.
In a written dissent, Justice Paula Nakayama says the state should provide "as many students as possible" with access to immersion programs, but disagrees the state constitution requires it.

University of Nevada, Reno offers first-ever Paiute language course
Preserving and revitalizing the Great Basin indigenous language of Numu
by Natalie Fry
August 8, 2019
Ralph Burns takes on a number of titles, including Pyramid Lake Paiute elder, storyteller and native-language specialist. This fall, he will add University of Nevada, Reno lecturer to the list.
Christina Thomas is a recent University graduate in music and biology, mom, former Washoe County School District teacher, experienced server, performing artist and most notably, a self-titled 'language warrior'. She began as a youth Paiute language instructor in 2015, replacing Burns as a language teacher at Reed High School in Sparks, and then later took an independent study course from Burns at the University.
Often singing and dancing at events together, their mentor/mentee relationship has deepened through the years, and this year, also together, they helped create and launch the first-ever Paiute language course to be taught at the University.
