Title: Classroom Writing Activity: Top Ten Lists
Body:

From https://www.compellingconversations.com

Eric H. Roth writes, "Americans love creating, reading and discussing top ten lists. The simple formatting breaks down larger topics and ideas by summarizing large chunks of information in a friendly, easily digestible manner." Get ideas for scaffolding this process for language learners in this blog post: https://www.compellingconversations.com/creating-top-ten-lists-in-the-english-classroom

Title: Three Simple Low-Prep Activities: Skeleton Questions, Mannequin Challenge, Article Cloze
Body:

From https://kisactivities.com

Here are three low-prep activities for language learners:

"In skeleton questions the teacher thinks of conversation questions for the class for some speaking practice on a given topic. However, instead of writing down the actual questions, she only provides key content words for the students to come up with the grammar needed to formulate those questions.

"...In mannequin challenge students pose for photographs and then they have to describe the actions being performed.

"...A lovely activity: articles in English. Find a song, remove all articles from the lyrics and then have the students fill in the gaps. Then simply play the song for correction."

Title: Cell Phones and Instruction: Classroom Policies That Work
Body:

From https://www.thedaringenglishteacher.com

English teacher and blogger Christina, the Daring English Teacher, shares her experiences with different schoolwide cell phone policies, different ideas for storing cell phones during class if students aren't to use them (your InterCom editor loves the idea of providing a charging station for your students), and ideas for using them productively as a part of instruction in this blog post. Although not specifically for language teachers, these guidelines are certainly relevant.

Title: Hand Gestures for Communication and Classroom Management
Body:

From https://lamaestralocablog.com

Teacher and blogger Annabelle Williamson has recently started teaching in a school that uses school-wide hand signals to show agreement, disagreement, a desire to speak next, and so on. Read how she incorporates the use of these signals into her language class in this blog post: https://lamaestralocablog.com/2019/07/13/classroom-management-part-5-silent-communicators/

Title: Deepening Students’ Comprehension of Authentic Resources: Thinking Routines
Body:

From https://passion4theprofession.com

In this recent blog post, Leslie Grahn introduces "thinking routines," which help students unpack and take ownership of their own thinking during learning activities. She then provides an example of embedding a thinking routine into a language learning lesson plans, this one centered around authentic resources dealing with a healthy lunch in Spanish.

Title: Blog Post: Making Good Mistakes
Body:

From https://www.compellingconversations.com

Eric H. Roth writes, "A 'good mistake,' as I explain on the first day of class, follows logical thinking, but just happens to produce an incorrect outcome. For example, a young boy might think 2+2= 22. You can see the student’s logic, but the answer is wrong. The student needs to know that 2+2=4. But you can also acknowledge that '22' is a 'good mistake.' It’s also often a common system error.

"Far too many ESL students, especially in countries that heavily rely on and sometimes worship standardized exams, are hesitant to experiment with English. Many of these students often avoid making any mistakes by remaining silent in conversation class rather than expanding their verbal skills. It is the job of the ESL teacher to identify this “good mistake” as a systems error. After all, you can’t learn to fluently speak a new language without making mistakes."

Title: Research Summary: What Can Screen Capture Reveal About Students’ Use of Software Tools When Undertaking a Paraphrasing Task?
Body:

From http://www.eltresearchbites.com

Clare Mass summarizes and discusses a 2018 article by C. Bailey and J. Withers, “What Can Screen Capture Reveal About Students’ Use of Software Tools When Undertaking a Paraphrasing Task?” published in the Journal of Academic Writing. One of the conclusions:

"The findings here highlight some major individual differences in proficiency with the electronic tools available. Bailey and Withers therefore advocate training students to use the basic helpful functions of a word processing programme and opening up dialogue about how they can be used effectively. They emphasise that the aim should be 'to discourage the indiscriminate and mechanical use of … substitution' in paraphrasing (p. 184), and suggest this training should focus on word class distinction, collocation and colligation."

Title: Book: Profiling Learner Language as a Dynamic System
Body:

From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781788922791

Profiling Learner Language as a Dynamic System
Edited by ZhaoHong Han
Published by Multilingual Matters

This volume sheds empirical light on Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST) by providing five sets of analyses of two longitudinal, interactional datasets, involving two dyads exchanging emails over one academic semester. The collective study on CDST is the first of its kind, in that it delves into multiple subsystems of learner language, traversing the domains of morphosyntax, semantics, pragmatics and discourse. The data analyses expose the dynamics of the interactional process, offering evidence of core characteristics of complex dynamic systems: sensitive dependence on initial conditions, interconnectedness of subsystems, the emergence of attractor states over time and variation in and between the individuals. Together, the analyses, each alone an engaging description, capture fine-grained patterns of change over time. More importantly, they demonstrate the impact of the ecosystem on individuals’ use of language. The book offers critical insights relevant to CDST researchers, theorists and empiricists alike, as well as to teachers seeking a nuanced understanding of the learning benefits of computer-mediated interactional activities.

Using Film and Media in the Language Classroom: Reflections on Research-led Teaching
Edited by Carmen Herrero and Isabelle Vanderschelden
Published by Multilingual Matters

This book demonstrates the positive impact of using film and audiovisual material in the language classroom. The chapters are evidence-based and address different levels and contexts of learning around the world. They demonstrate the benefits of using moving images and films to develop intercultural awareness and promote multilingualism, and suggest Audiovisual Translation (AVT) activities and projects to enhance language learning. The book will be a valuable continuing professional development resource for language teachers and those involved in curriculum development, as well as bringing the latest research, theory and pedagogical techniques to teacher training courses.
