It was another hot, humid August day in Eunice. A 12-year-old Nathan Rabalais sat across from his Mawmaw at the restaurant, waiting for their to-go order to make it home before her soap opera started.

Then Mawmaw, without trying, said something profound as they sat inside the local Crispy Cajun.

“Everything is Cajun now. We never called ourselves that," she said.

This was a surprise to Rabalais. To him, his Mawmaw was the most Cajun person in the world, and on that day she declared she wasn’t really at all. 

"Well, what are you?" he asked her.

And without hesitating, she answered: "We are French, because that’s what we spoke. We are just French."

That memory helped to shape Rabalais’ view of his Mawmaw, his family and his identity. And it helps to inform a new documentary he created with his brother, David Rabalais.

“Finding Cajun” explores what it means to be Cajun, poking at questions about culture, race and identity in south Louisiana and what the label has come to mean to many inside and outside of Acadiana.

Title: Increasing English Learners’ Academic Language by Learning About Words

Jana Echevarria writes, "English learners, those students who are still in the process of becoming fluent English speakers, have a lot of English vocabulary to learn. Beyond the words they need to know and use to communicate clearly with others and express their knowledge, ask questions, and convey ideas, they also have to acquire the academic language used in school subject areas, including a level of English that will prepare them to graduate and for college and careers.

"That’s a lot of words. One way to accelerate their English proficiency is to instill in English learners the idea that learning about words can be fun. Teaching about words and word parts expands students’ vocabularies exponentially. Of course, there are key vocabulary terms that need to be taught and practiced so that specific lessons are understandable, but there is tremendous benefit to spending time letting students play with words.

"English learners have the asset of their home language (L1). They already know a lot of words and the concepts those words represent. Tap into those words and use them to teach English vocabulary, and even expand their L1 vocabulary."

Title: Culturally-Responsive Instruction for English Learners

Tan Huynh gives ten recommendations for being culturally responsive in ways that support English learners: 

1. Pronounce an EL’s name correctly
2. Use a nickname the EL chooses
3. Encourage the use of any language
4. Permit ELs to use resources published in their home languages 
5. Read books that reflect ELs’ experiences 
6. Encourage ELs to share connections between their lives and the topic 
7. Use ELs’ experiences to activate prior knowledge
8. Explicitly teach students how to collaborate respectfully 
9. Allow ELs to work with non-ELs
10. Expect ELs to learn the same content in the same room as non-ELs and engage in the same task.

He concludes, "It matters less which one of the ten items above you choose to implement. What matters most is that we affirm ELs’ identities through the way we teach. Regardless of their cultures, life experiences, and personal interests, all students want to be identified as intelligent and capable; valuable and honest."

Title: Basics of Using Corpora for Learning English

Greg Kessler writes, "One of the great advantages of a corpus is that it presents language in context. This is known as a concordance and allows learners to recognize relationships among words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. In particular, this extended context allows us to see collocations, or the connections, between words in the various ways they may be used. For example, we can get a better idea which adjectives are commonly associated with a particular noun and what prepositions are associated with a particular verb. If you think of how you may use a dictionary to learn new words, you realize that there is typically a single sentence that serves as the example for any particular word. With a corpus, you may have dozens or even hundreds of examples. Further, these are likely to be authentic language rather than the one contrived sentence that is likely to be included in a dictionary. Having access to multiple authentic examples provides learners with lexical as well as grammatical models. Corpora may be most useful in order to encourage learners to experiment with different sentence constructions."
