Title: MEOC Middle East Book Awards Offer Classrooms Sets of Books

Each year, the Middle East Outreach Council (MEOC) sponsors the Middle East Book Awards to recognize outstanding work that contributes to a more meaningful understanding of the region. QFI and MEOC have partnered to make these award-winning books by Arab authors or about the Middle East available to primary- and secondary-school teachers and schools.

Teachers can apply for up to three classroom sets of one of the MEOC award-winning books. If selected, teachers receive the requested books and develop a lesson plan or classroom activity related to the book s/he selected. That resource may be shared on Al-Masdar at teachalmasdar.com.

The grant program is open year-round and applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Title: FinnFest 2019

Each year, FinnFest USA creates a pop-up town celebrating the connections between Finland and the USA. In 2019, the festival travels to Detroit from September 19-22. Thursday will involve three all-day seminars (Labor History, Genealogy, and Finnish language learning). On Friday/Saturday, seminars and workshops will share space and time with a tori featuring booths selling products and presenting information. On Sunday, guided tours will unwrap both historic and contemporary Detroit. All-ages community events celebrating Finnish America through song, food, and folk dancing are also daily occurrences. There will be opportunities to learn Finnish, to enjoy nature at the historic Finn Camp, and to connect with old friends and make new ones.

Oscan is a language spoken and written in central and southern Italy from around 500 BCE to 50 BCE. It is closely related to Latin, but is a language in its own right. Oscan was in use in many areas that are now of great archaeological importance, including Pompeii and Herculaneum.

This website has a short course for learning some Oscan, including some help learning the alphabets used to write Oscan, basic vocabulary and grammar, and some exercises for you to complete.
