Title: North Dakota Offers Seal of Biliteracy
Body:

From https://www.nd.gov/dpi/uploads/1618/MemoNDSB21519.pdf

From the NDDPI press release:

The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) is proud to announce the implementation of the North Dakota Seal of Biliteracy (NDSB) award program. The NDSB is an award presented to graduating students who have demonstrated proficiency in a language in addition to English.

North Dakota joins more than half of the nation in awarding a Seal of Biliteracy. The NDSB is established to recognize students and provide an identifier of this accomplishment for employers and post-secondary institutions. The NDSB serves to inspire the implementation of biliteracy programs and pathways of language development in districts across the state and help districts demonstrate value in diversity/culture.

Title: Meduza: Russian News Outlet in Russian and English
Body:

From the SEELANGS listserv:

I am writing to spread the word that Meduza in English (meduza.io/en), the international arm of the independent Russian-language news outlet Meduza (meduza.io), has been expanding to include a broader range of cultural coverage. We hope that our stories on literature and the arts in the Russian-speaking world will be useful to you and your students. Like our daily newsletter and much of our news coverage, many of our updates on cultural events are exclusive to the English-language site and do not appear in Russian.

This morning, for example, an excerpt from Lisa Hayden's new English translation of Guzel Yakhina's debut novel, Zuleikha otkryvaet glaza, became available on our site: https://meduza.io/en/feature/2019/02/26/a-tale-of-resilience-and-love.

We also recently published a directory of forthcoming English-language books related to the Russian-speaking world: https://meduza.io/en/slides/2019-s-top-russia-related-books.

Two examples of recent original stories on film and the visual arts are available here:
https://meduza.io/en/feature/2019/01/18/rare-immersive-exhibition-of-christian-wooden-sculpture-opens-in-st-petersburg-s-manege
https://meduza.io/en/news/2019/01/15/critics-name-the-best-of-russian-film-in-2018-white-elephant-awards-as-serebrennikov-trial-continues

The bread and butter of our coverage still lies in translating the most interesting material that appears in Russian on meduza.io, and we hope having those pieces available in both languages will be helpful for Russian learners.

If you have any thoughts on how Meduza in English can better serve your students and colleagues, I would love to hear them. Please feel free to share any feedback or pitches for new stories off-list by writing to hilah@meduza.io.

All the best,
Hilah

Title: Reflection for Dual Language Instructors
Body:

From https://www.languagemagazine.com/2019/01/16/a-time-for-reflection/

A Time for Reflection
by Ingrid T. Colón
January 16, 2019

Historically, in the U.S., deficit perspectives about linguistically diverse students have dominated the conversation. Fortunately, the rise of dual-language (DL) programs is helping to reframe the dominant narrative. These programs center on helping students become bilingual, biliterate, and culturally competent. Because of these goals, DL teachers must not only know about strategies and practices that promote bilingualism and biliteracy but also how to think about their own perspectives and teaching practices that will influence the way they prepare students for success in a global economy and society.

A new article published online in the Revista de Sociología de la Educación explores the importance of DL teacher preparation and professional development to explicitly address self-examination—the process of reflecting on one’s own actions and motivations—in shaping the curriculum and instructional processes. In this article, Dr. Cristina Alfaro and Dr. Ana Hernández describe the role of the four tenets for self-examination—ideology, pedagogy, access, and equity (IPAE)—and what they mean for DL teachers. Moreover, the authors have developed a guide with questions on the four tenets of self-examination.
