Title: New Podcast: You Can Learn Chinese
Body:

From http://youcanlearnchinese.mandarincompanion.com/

Hosts Jared Turner and John Pasden bring you this new podcast series to discuss everything learning Chinese. As John Pasden says in a separate post (https://www.sinosplice.com/life/archives/2019/02/12/you-can-learn-chinese-podcast), "This podcast is about learning Chinese; it doesn’t teach Chinese. And while it may sound like it’s for beginners, learners of all levels should get something out of it. As the name suggests, it’s also more motivational and conceptual than technical. For example, rather than talking about how to set up Pleco or Anki for optimal flashcard review sessions, we might talk about how flashcards can be a useful tool but are not a one-size-fits-all method, and you can learn Chinese without going full-on flashcard crazy."

Access the podcast episodes (there are three as of this writing) at http://youcanlearnchinese.mandarincompanion.com/

Title: Japan Recognizes Ainu
Body:

From https://www.languagemagazine.com/2019/02/19/japan-recognizes-ainu/

Japan Recognizes Ainu
February 19, 2019

The Japanese government has endorsed a bill to officially recognize the Ainu ethnic minority as an indigenous people of Japan for the first time and calls for “the creation of a society in which they can take pride in their heritage.” However, the move may have come too late to save the Ainu language, now spoken by only a handful of people.

The bill includes a subsidy program for regional revitalization to help local authorities implement projects to promote Ainu culture. It also calls for deregulation to make it easier for the Ainu people to gather wood in state-owned forests and catch salmon in local rivers, as part of efforts to help them preserve their cultural traditions.

...The bill still needs to be passed by the Diet (Japan’s legislature) which will likely happen during the current session.

...Ainu is a language isolate, unrelated to any other language, spoken only on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido by less than a hundred people. It was once spoken in the Kurile Islands, the northern part of Honshu and the southern half of Sakhalin, which is now part of Russia.

Title: Monet Exhibition in California and Texas
Body:

From https://france-amerique.com/en/monet-the-late-years/

An exhibition opening on February 16 at San Francisco’s De Young Museum focuses on the last years, and the last works, of French painter Claude Monet, an icon of Impressionism and a pioneer of abstractionism.

The exhibition brings together some 60 paintings, including 20 from Paris’s Musée Marmottan Monet. A number of the pieces have never before been exhibited in the United States. Beyond emphasizing Monet’s stature as a great Impressionist, the show invites viewers to consider his importance as a pioneer of abstraction.

The exhibition will be showing in the De Young Museum in San Francisco, California, February 16 through May 27. It will be in the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, June 16 through September 15.
