Title: Chinese Guest Teacher Program Accepting Applications
Body:
From https://professionals.collegeboard.org/k-12/awards/chinese/guest
The Chinese Guest Teacher Program is designed to help U.S. schools develop Chinese language and culture study programs and to promote international exchange between the United States and China. Made possible through a collaboration between the College Board and Hanban, the program has grown to be the largest Chinese visiting teacher program in the U.S. Each year, the program serves hundreds of K–12 schools and districts nationwide and reaches tens of thousands of U.S. students.
This program provides an experienced language teacher from China to fill full-time Chinese language instruction positions in a host school or district for a period of one to three years. The guest teachers have at least two years of teaching experience and go through a rigorous selection and training process before arriving at the host schools. Participating institutions are responsible for providing a partial salary to the guest teacher, and the remainder is subsidized by a stipend from Hanban.
An online information webinar will be held on January 10.
The application priority deadline is January 14, 2019.

Title: Article about Cuneiform

The key to cracking long-dead languages?
by Sophie Hardach
December 10, 2018
Developed more than 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers where modern-day Iraq now lies, cuneiform captured life in a complex and fascinating civilisation for some three millennia. From furious letters between warring royal siblings to rituals for soothing a fractious baby, the tablets offer a unique insight into a society at the dawn of history.
...However, since cuneiform was first deciphered by scholars around 150 years ago, the script has only yielded its secrets to a small group of people who can read it. Some 90% of cuneiform texts remain untranslated.
That could change thanks to a very modern helper: machine translation.

The core activity of OASIS is the writing and dissemination of one-page research article summaries from peer-reviewed journals, written to be easily read and digested by a non-specialist audience. Summaries are approved and often written or co-written by the original authors. The project already has 150 research summaries available. Here are a few that your InterCom editor would like to read:
