COMPUTEL-3
3rd Workshop on Computational Methods for Endangered Languages
Honolulu, Hawaii, February 26-27, 2019
The ComputEL-3 workshop will focus on the use of computational methods in the study, support, and revitalization of endangered languages. The primary aim of the workshop is to continue narrowing the gap between computational linguists interested in working on methods for endangered languages, field linguists working on documenting these languages, and the language communities who are striving to maintain their languages.
We take seriously the goal of reaching all relevant communities. To support this goal, ComputEL-3 aims to alternate between co-location with computational linguistics conferences and with language documentation conferences. ComputEL-3 will immediately precede the 6th International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC6) hosted by the University of Hawaii, February 28 — March 3, 2019.

Title: Summer Seminars in Athens
Body:
From http://caas-cw.org/wp/2018/12/04/ascsa-summer-seminars/
The Summer Seminars of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens are two 18-day sessions designed for those who wish to study specific topics in Greece and visit major monuments with exceptional scholars as study leaders, and to improve their understanding of the country’s landscape, history, literature, and culture.
Enrollment is open to graduate and advanced undergraduate students, as well as to high school and college instructors of classics and related subjects. Each seminar is limited to twenty participants. The language of instruction is English.
Here are the planned seminars for summer 2019:
Greece from the Sea (June 17 to July 5, 2019)
This seminar will introduce students to a variety of aspects of life in Greek waters from the Paleolithic to our own time. The experience involves sailing and hiking, lectures and readings, visits to sites and museums, presentations by scholars, student reports, and encounters with our Greek hosts. In particular, the nautical life will give participants a sense of maritime Greece as the Greeks saw it in an age before mechanized travel: from the sea in sailing vessels. Students will learn to sail and to live aboard a sailboat for two weeks.
Finding the Spartans: History, Landscape, & Archaeology (July 11 to July 29, 2019)
In this seminar, participants will examine the Spartans and their dependent populations as inhabitants of a state that was for a time the most significant political and military force in Greece by means of the material culture and environment of the southern Peloponnese. The opportunity to engage directly with the texts, epigraphy, and archaeological evidence available on site will be of immense value to all students of antiquity.
The application deadline is January 15.

Title: Language Task around Famous French People
Body:
Blogger and teacher Mme Moghtader writes, "Inspired by the book While we’re on the Topic by Bill Van Patten, I have been thinking about how tasks, as opposed to activities, fit into my teaching. And mostly recently, I have been exploring how a project in the World Language proficiency classroom can become a task. My most clear understanding of a task in this context is when students research, write up and present information, the class then does something with that information, like infer, rank, rate, group or compare.
"In this example, students present information in a guessing game format and the rest of the students have to infer who the person is that is being described. Then, when students present a famous French-speaking person, the rest of the class listens to rate, rank, group and compare the people."

Title: Caga Tió: Catalán Christmas Traditionq
Body:
Your InterCom editor, who taught high school Spanish before coming to work at CASLS, had never heard of the Catalán tradition of feeding a log for weeks before Christmas, keeping it warm with a blanket and hat, and then having children hit it with sticks to help it "poop" candy and other gifts. Here's a collection of resources dealing with this tradition: https://elmundodepepita.blogspot.com/2018/12/caga-tio-catalan-christmas-tradition.html
