Title: Coming in 2019: Global Seal of Biliteracy
Body:

From https://www.globalsealofbiliteracy.net/the-global-seal/

We've been reporting on the Seal of Biliteracy movement for some time; more and more states are adopting this standard to recognize high school students who are literate in more than one language. However, according to the Global Seal of Biliteracy website, the seal "is generally available only to public school students in participating districts, and the standards for receiving it vary by state."

The Global Seal of Biliteracy addresses the limited availability of opportunity to earn a seal by setting consistent standards for a Seal of Biliteracy that is accessible to anyone in any school setting, anywhere in the world.

The organization has begun to accept preliminary applications now and plans to begin awarding Global Seals of Biliteracy on January 1, 2019.

Title: Language Hurdles Plague Two Koreas After Years of Division

Say What? Language Hurdles Plague Two Koreas After Years of Division
BY JEONGMIN KIM AND Josh Smith
August 10, 2018

When South Korean businessman Kim Yong-tae worked with North Koreans at the Kaesong Industrial Complex before it was closed in 2016, one of the biggest challenges was communicating in what is ostensibly a shared language.

"There were confounding moments because there were terms I never heard of while working and living just in South Korea," he said, describing blank looks from some North Korean workers when he used the word "container," which is pronounced similar to its English term in South Korea.

Between the South's increasing adoption of international terms and the North's political sensitivity to some words, the growing language divide is complicating cooperation on a range of joint cultural and economic exchanges as ties between the neighbors improve.

To counter the confusion and promote a feeling of unity, the South Korean government is working to restart an obscure academic project aimed at developing a common Korean language dictionary with the North.

North and South Korea speak the same language based on the Hangeul alphabet, but after decades of division, only about 70 percent of words are mutually understood, according to some experts.

Title: Workshops on Japanese Noh Traditional Theatre in Oregon
Body:

From https://caps.uoregon.edu/2018/08/16/flowers-of-performance/

The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies is pleased to present four days of events on Traditional Japanese Noh Theatre, to be held at the University of Oregon, the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, and the Portland Art Museum. The events, which will include performances and workshops, are to be led by TAKEDA Tomoyuki, an active performer from one of the most prestigious schools of Noh, the Kanze School. Established in the fourteenth century, Noh is characterized by austere simplicity of performance and profoundly poetic plots. In a series of four workshops (two of which will be accompanied by costumed performance), Takeda-sensei and his troupe will cover a range of topics from history, dance and chanting to costumes and masks. Audiences will have the opportunity to take part in a dance and chanting sequence, and to learn about costumes through dressing demonstrations.

All workshops are free and open to the public.

The Portland events will take place September 29 and 30, and the Eugene events will take place October 1 and 2.
