Title: Categorizing Information in the World Language Class
Body:

From http://teachinginthetargetlanguage.com

Asking your students to sort things into categories is a great way to use higher-order thinking skills with low language levels, especially in the interpretive mode. In this blog post you can get some specific ideas for what you ask students to do with different topically-specific groups of vocabulary.

Body:

The school year is over, and you made it! Our InterCom theme for July is self care. Read about languaging, what it is and why you love it, and how it relates to your self care, in today's Topic of the Week article by Christopher Daradics. Next week Linda Forrest will talk about the importance of rest, and in the following two weeks Stephanie Knight and Mandy Gettler will explore setting boundaries and prioritizing your use of time so that you can get the rest you need. Title: CASLS Celebrates Third Title VI Cycle
Body:

CASLS first became a Title VI National Foreign Language Resource Center in 2003, broadening its mission to support the teaching and learning of all world languages. Title VI funding provides the intellectual scaffold for CASLS’ projects, and we are currently celebrating the completion of our third Title VI cycle, which funded nine projects from 2014-2018.

The Bridging Project is an online course for Chinese, Russian, and Spanish high school students who have high levels of proficiency, typically immersion or heritage learners. The content is appropriate for both age and proficiency, and students work in teams to complete a final project that engages members of their local community using the target language. Learn more at https://casls.uoregon.edu/student-programs/bridging-project/.

Ecopod is a series of place-based mobile applications that engage learners to solve problems, find collaborators, and build community. Ecopod was part of the University of Oregon’s academic residential hall experience for first- and second-year students.

Place- and Experience-based Database for Language Learning (Pebll) is a curated database of place-based experiences relevant to language learning. Find opportunities to expand learning outside of the classroom in a variety of languages at https://pebll.uoregon.edu/.

CASLS worked with language faculty at the University of Oregon to facilitate four-year language testing and to use that data as the basis of a faculty learning community, with the goal of articulating instruction and supporting proficiency-based instruction.

Intercultural, Pragmatic, Interactional Competence (IPIC) Measure will be the first measure of pragmatic and intercultural competence. Using digital simulations, the IPIC Measure will provide a holistic picture of a learner’s ability to use Chinese and Spanish in a real-life context. CASLS and the Assessment and Evaluation Language Resource Center worked together to determine the measure’s theoretical foundation and develop a prototype.

LinguaFolio Online is an e-portfolio that provides a place for learners of any language and level to set goals, showcase their proficiency, and track their skills according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements. Learn more at https://linguafolio.uoregon.edu/.

InterCom is a customizable weekly e-newsletter. Each issue includes a Topic of the Week, Activity of the Week, Spotlight, and curated third-party resources tailored to your interests. Be sure to log in and keep your preferences up to date!

Games2Teach is a website with classroom-ready activities for educators wishing to incorporate games into the curriculum. Activities for Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced learners are available for more than 14 different languages. The website also includes professional development resources. Download activities at https://casls.uoregon.edu/classroom-resources/games2teach/.

Language in Research and Teaching: Proceedings from the CALS Conference 2016
Edited by Marija Brala Vukanović and Anita Memišević
Published by Peter Lang

This book aims at bridging language research and language teaching and contains four sections. It opens with two papers which relate language to literature: one exploring childlike language, the second investigating the distinction between literary and non-literary text categorization principles. Next are the papers on multicultural and sociolinguistic topics, including a paper on English as an international language, and two papers on the perception of bilingualism in education. The third thematic section explores semantics, with two papers on prefixes and one on metaphor. The final thematic section is dedicated to syntax, with one paper on complex predicates, one on syntactic complexity in spontaneous spoken language and one of Croatian null and overt subject pronouns.

Title: Book: The Oxford Handbook of Language Policy and Planning
Body:

From https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-oxford-handbook-of-language-policy-and-planning-9780190458898?cc=us&lang=en&

The Oxford Handbook of Language Policy and Planning
Edited by James W. Tollefson and Miguel Pérez-Milans
Published by Oxford University Press

This Handbook provides a state-of-the-art account of research in language policy and planning (LPP). Through a critical examination of LPP, the Handbook offers new direction for a field in theoretical and methodological turmoil as a result of the socio-economic, institutional, and discursive processes of change taking place under the conditions of Late Modernity. Late Modernity refers to the widespread processes of late capitalism leading to the selective privatization of services (including education), the information revolution associated with rapidly changing statuses and functions of languages, the weakening of the institutions of nation-states (along with the strengthening of non-state actors), and the fragmentation of overlapping and competing identities associated with new complexities of language-identity relations and new forms of multilingual language use. As an academic discipline in the social sciences, LPP is fraught with tensions between these processes of change and the still-powerful ideological framework of modern nationalism. It is an exciting and energizing time for LPP research.

This Handbook propels the field forward, offering a dialogue between the two major historical trends in LPP associated with the processes of Modernity and Late Modernity: the focus on continuity behind the institutional policies of the modern nation-state, and the attention to local processes of uncertainty and instability across different settings resulting from processes of change. The Handbook takes great strides toward overcoming the long-standing division between "top-down" and "bottom-up" analysis in LPP research, setting the stage for theoretical and methodological innovation.

Title: Call for Papers: 3rd Workshop on the Use of Computational Methods in the Study of Endangered Languages
Body:

From https://linguistlist.org/issues/29/29-2723.html

The ComputEL-3 workshop will focus on the use of computational methods in the study, support, and revitalization of endangered languages. The primary aim of the workshop is to continue narrowing the gap between computational linguists interested in working on methods for endangered languages, field linguists working on documenting these languages, and the language communities who are striving to maintain their languages.

The organizers take seriously the goal of reaching all relevant communities. To support this goal, ComputEL-3 aims to alternate between co-location with computational linguistics conferences and with language documentation conferences. ComputEL-3 will take place February 26-27, 2019, immediately preceding the 6th International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC6) hosted by the University of Hawai'i.

Papers are invited which explore the interface and intersection of computational linguistics, documentary linguistics, and community-based language revitalization efforts.

Submissions must be uploaded via TBD no later than October 15, 2018.
