TitleCASLS Celebrates Third Title VI Cycle
Body

CASLS first became a Title VI National Foreign Language Resource Center in 2003, broadening its mission to support the teaching and learning of all world languages. Title VI funding provides the intellectual scaffold for CASLS’ projects, and we are currently celebrating the completion of our third Title VI cycle, which funded nine projects from 2014-2018.

The Bridging Project is an online course for Chinese, Russian, and Spanish high school students who have high levels of proficiency, typically immersion or heritage learners. The content is appropriate for both age and proficiency, and students work in teams to complete a final project that engages members of their local community using the target language. Learn more at https://casls.uoregon.edu/student-programs/bridging-project/.

Ecopod is a series of place-based mobile applications that engage learners to solve problems, find collaborators, and build community. Ecopod was part of the University of Oregon’s academic residential hall experience for first- and second-year students.

Place- and Experience-based Database for Language Learning (Pebll) is a curated database of place-based experiences relevant to language learning. Find opportunities to expand learning outside of the classroom in a variety of languages at https://pebll.uoregon.edu/.

CASLS worked with language faculty at the University of Oregon to facilitate four-year language testing and to use that data as the basis of a faculty learning community, with the goal of articulating instruction and supporting proficiency-based instruction.

Intercultural, Pragmatic, Interactional Competence (IPIC) Measure will be the first measure of pragmatic and intercultural competence. Using digital simulations, the IPIC Measure will provide a holistic picture of a learner’s ability to use Chinese and Spanish in a real-life context. CASLS and the Assessment and Evaluation Language Resource Center worked together to determine the measure’s theoretical foundation and develop a prototype.

LinguaFolio Online is an e-portfolio that provides a place for learners of any language and level to set goals, showcase their proficiency, and track their skills according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements. Learn more at https://linguafolio.uoregon.edu/.
