Title: Book: Learning Pragmatics from Native and Nonnative Language Teachers
Body:

From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781783099917

Learning Pragmatics from Native and Nonnative Language Teachers
By Andrew D. Cohen
Published by Multilingual Matters

This book deals with intercultural pragmatics and how both nonnative teachers (NNTs) and native teachers (NTs) may enhance their classroom instruction regarding target language (TL) pragmatics. It focuses primarily on the experiences of instructors as they teach their learners about the pragmatics of the TL, both in second and foreign language learning settings. It makes clear that there are aspects of teaching pragmatics where it may help to be an NT and other areas where it may help to be an NNT and proposes creative ideas that both sets of teachers may draw on to compensate for gaps in their knowledge. Further themes in the book include ideas for motivating students who want to learn about pragmatics, the role of technology in teaching and learning pragmatics, the role of learning strategies, the assessment of pragmatics and ways to research pragmatics. The book will be of interest to teachers, teacher educators and students interested in researching and improving the teaching of pragmatics.

Title: Book: Routledge Handbook of Arabic Second Language Acquisition
Body:

From https://www.routledge.com/Routledge-Handbook-of-Arabic-Second-Language-Acquisition/Alhawary/p/book/9781138940550

Routledge Handbook of Arabic Second Language Acquisition
Edited by Mohammad T. Alhawary
Published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group

The Routledge Handbook of Arabic Second Language Acquisition introduces major current approaches in Arabic second language acquisition (SLA) research and offers empirical findings on crucial aspects and issues to do with the learning of Arabic as a foreign language and Arabic SLA. It brings together leading academics in the field to synthesize existing research and develops a new framework for analyzing important topics within Arabic SLA.

This handbook will be suitable as a reference work for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students and scholars actively researching in this area and is primarily relevant to sister disciplines within teacher training and Arabic applied linguistics. The themes and findings should, however, also be attractive to other areas of study, including theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognition, and cognitive psychology.

Title: Call for Proposals: Electronic Village Online
Body:

From http://evosessions.pbworks.com/w/page/125690429/Call_for_Proposals_2019

For five weeks in January-February (January 13-February 17, 2019), participants and ESOL experts engage in collaborative, online discussions or hands-on virtual workshops of professional and scholarly benefit. These five-week sessions allow a fuller development of ideas than is possible in convention sessions.

Co-moderation with several other people is strongly recommended. Session leaders (moderators) need not have previous experience in online teaching. Hands-on training in online discussion management and the use of live virtual chat and audio rooms will take place during our moderators' training session October 21 - November 18, 2018.

EVO sessions are sponsored by a TESOL Interest Section or affiliate, an IATEFL Special Interest Group, or other groups or affiliates. Sponsors provide no financial support. If you do not have a sponsor, the Coordination Team can help you find one or more.

The deadline for proposals is September 25, 2018.

Title: L2 Digital Literacies Symposium
Body:

From https://l2dl.arizona.edu/

Participation, Equity and Inclusion: L2DL Digital Literacies (L2DL) Symposium
a hybrid symposium on research and practice
October 15th-20th
University of Arizona

Participation, a long-standing assessment category on language syllabi, has found a new conceptual life over the last few decades as digital literacies practices have become a part of everyday life and learning. This symposium aims to contribute to discussions of the role of digital literacies in second language learning and teaching and biliteracy development, by considering the ways in which technologically-mediated communication can enable new forms of participation and access, but also the ways in which participation in digital spaces is rarely full and equitable, but is more often than not fraught with questions of legitimacy and symbolic power.

New state law will establish certification process for Cherokee language teachers
by Scott McKie B.P.
June 14, 2018

A double-faceted bill passed the North Carolina General Assembly on Monday, June 11 that will be a game-changer for the way fluent Cherokee speakers work in the classroom to teach their language. House Bill 92, introduced in February 2017, passed 113-0 on Monday and states “the State Board of Education shall enter into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians specifying the criteria that must be met in order for individuals to teach Cherokee language and culture classes”. Governor Roy Cooper signed the bill into law on Wednesday, June 13.
