Language Education and Emotions, this year's conference, will bring together scholars from all over the world to share their interest in the role and place of emotions in language learning and teaching. Research into the influence of emotions in language education is not new but is continuously evolving. The conference will provide an overview of the scientific status quo in the field of Language Education and Emotions. Secondly, it will identify the challenges our research is confronted with. This will allow us to build a research agenda for the future.

Language Education and Emotions is centering on:

  • Emotions and the Language Learner: e.g. foreign language anxiety, self-esteem, motivation, willingness to communicate, inhibition, autonomy
  • Emotions and the Language Teacher: e.g. self-efficacy, motivation, empathy
  • Emotions and the Teaching and Learning Process: e.g. language teaching methods, approaches in language teaching, learning materials/ tools, CALL, evaluation

The 3nd Northwest Conference on Japanese Pedagogy will be held at the University of Washington on May 12-13, 2018. The conference theme is "Content Based Language Instruction (CBLI): Implementation and Effectiveness 「CBLI: 実践と効果」" and a keynote speaker has been invited to give a talk in this theme. The rest of the conference will include individual paper presentations on any area of Japanese pedagogy. The conference is open to college-level and secondary school teachers.

The Modified Oral Proficiency Workshop (MOPI) is a two-day workshop introducing the oral proficiency levels of Novice and Intermediate. You will learn about the characteristics of Novice and Intermediate speakers and learn techniques to conduct interviews and determine levels. Each participate will have the opportunity to practice an interview.

The workshop will be in Lake Forest on June 18 and 19. Registration is due by May 1.

Supporting Student Argumentation in English Language Arts and Social Studies
Part of Stanford University's Understanding Language series

During the course, participants will learn to:

  • listen purposefully to assess student argumentation
  • craft effective prompts and create argumentation opportunities within lessons
  • model and build activities for identifying, evaluating, and improving argumentation supports
  • provide productive feedback to students and make instructional changes to strengthen arguments

This argumentation course is based on a previous course offered by Rutherford-Quach and professors Karen Thompson and Kenji Hakuta. The current course has been revised and augmented based on participant feedback and to reflect the content-area specializations.
