An Introduction to Multilingualism: Language in a Changing World
By Florian Coulmas
Published by Oxford University Press

This book offers an introduction to the many facets of multilingualism in a changing world. It begins with an overview of the multiplicity of human languages and their geographic distribution, before moving on to the key question of what multilingualism actually is and what is understood by terms such as 'mother tongue', 'native speaker', and 'speech community'. In the chapters that follow, Florian Coulmas systematically explores multilingualism with respect to the individual, institutions, cities, nations, and cyberspace. In each of these domains, the dynamics of language choice are undergoing changes as a result of economic, political, and cultural forces. Against this background, two chapters discuss the effects of linguistic diversity on the integration and separation of language and society, before a final chapter describes and assesses research methods for investigating multilingualism. Each chapter concludes with problems and questions for discussion, which place the topic in a real-world context.

The book explores where, when, and why multilingualism came to be regarded as a problem, and why it presents a serious challenge for linguistic theory today. It provides the basic tools to analyse different kinds of multilingualism at both the individual and society level, and will be of interest to students of linguistics, sociology, education, and communication studies.

Strategies of Adaptation in Tourist Communication: Linguistic Insights
Edited by Gudrun Held
Published by Brill

The papers in this volume study the relationship between language use and the concept of the "tourist gaze" through a range of communicative practices from different cultures and languages. From a pragmatic perspective, the authors investigate how language constantly adapts to contextual constraints which affect tourism discourse as a strategic meaning-making process that turns insignificant places into desirable tourist destinations. The case studies draw on both, in situ interactions with visitors, such as guided tours and counter information, old and new mediatized genres, i.e. guide books, travelogues, print advertising as well as TV-commercials, service web-sites and apps. Despite the diversity of data, one of the common findings in the volume is that staging the sensory 'lived' tourist experience is the lynchpin of all communicative practices. Hence, the use of tourism language reveals itself as the mirror of how 'people on the move' continuously enact as 'tourists' and 'places' are constructed as must-see 'sights.'

Title: Call for Papers: Pedagogical Conceptualization of Content Knowledge in ESP
Body:

From https://linguistlist.org/issues/29/29-374.html

Call for Papers: Volume 5, Number 3 of Journal of Teaching English for Specific and Academic Purposes
Pedagogical Conceptualization of Content Knowledge in ESP

Among the many specificities and challenges of working as an ESP lecturer, one of the greatest and the initial one is for them to abstract pedagogical content knowledge. This critical issue is often under emphasized and under explored in ESP theory and research. This issue of our journal invites submission of papers dealing with how an ESP lecturer who has first gained sufficient insight into domain content knowledge, organizes that knowledge to be presented for instruction, how is that knowledge conceptualized into representative units of discourse, semantic, morphological, grammatical structures, how is thus adequate methodological approach decided upon?

Paper submission deadline is August 31st, 2018.

Title: 2018 STARTALK/NHLRC Teacher Workshop
Body:

From http://nhlrc.ucla.edu/nhlrc/events/startalkworkshop/2018/home

Our sister LRC the National Heritage Language Resource Center, along with STARTALK, is hosting a two-part workshop to help language teachers face the challenge of teaching heritage language (HL) students. The three-week online component opens on June 1, 2018, followed by a five-day face-to-face workshop (June 25-29, 2018 at UCLA). The online assignments focus on identifying and addressing the linguistic gaps in HL students' language, differentiated teaching, and teaching mixed classes. The face-to-face workshop will focus on how to use project-based learning (PBL) as a useful tool in HL instruction. Accepted participants will be required to complete both online assignments and the face-to-face session.

There is no charge for the workshop. A limited number of stipends will cover travel and accommodations for out-of-state participants.
