2018 Visiting Teachers from Spain Program taking applications
by Alfonso De Torres Núñez
March 1, 2018

Apply now to host a visiting teacher from Spain for the 2018-19 school year.

To provide quality instruction in Spanish from native speakers of the language and to promote rich cross-cultural exchange, Kentucky has a formal memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Education of Spain that facilitates the placement of visiting educators from Spain in Kentucky schools.

Since 2000, the KDE has worked with the Ministry of Education of Spain to help local school districts fill vacant P-12 Spanish teacher positions, as well as positions for other content areas in the case of schools with dual language immersion programs.

...KDE facilitates initial interviews in Madrid, Spain, in late March or April from a pool of highly-qualified candidates that have been previously screened by the Spanish Ministry of Education. The department sponsors the required J-1 Visa under authority of the U.S. Department of State's Exchange Visitor Program.

Title: Report: Growing Superdiversity among Young U.S. Dual Language Learners and Its Implications

Growing Superdiversity among Young U.S. Dual Language Learners and Its Implications
By Maki Park, Jie Zong, and Jeanne Batalova
February 2018

Young children growing up in households where at least one parent speaks a language other than English now make up nearly one-third of all young children ages 8 and under in the United States. The families of these Dual Language Learners (DLLs) speak many languages and have varied countries of origin, races and ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. For early childhood education and care (ECEC) programs, schools, and other systems, this superdiversity has important implications. But while considerable evidence points to the effectiveness of bilingual education models in classrooms where a single non-English language is dominant, much less is known about what works well for DLLs in superdiverse settings.

This report explores the diversity within the DLL population at the national, state, and local level. Although a clear majority of parents of DLLs speak Spanish nationwide (59 percent), this average belies considerable state-to-state variation; in Texas, 78 percent of parents of DLLs speak Spanish, compared to 16 percent in Vermont and Maine. Other languages including Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Arabic, and a range of less commonly spoken languages are also represented to varying degrees. And even within states that appear relatively homogenous overall, certain counties may still have DLL populations that exhibit superdiversity.

Title: March Madness Resources
Body:

A few weeks ago (http://caslsintercom.uoregon.edu/content/24639) we shared resources for creating NCAA basketball tournament-style brackets in foreign language classes. Although many teachers have their students vote on favorite songs in the brackets, they can be used in other ways as well. Here are more resources for implementing March Madness in your classroom:

Title: Activity Idea: Today in History
Body:

From https://martinabex.com

Here is a low-prep idea that gets students using their critical thinking skills: find three things that happened on this day in history and a fourth that did NOT happen. Students guess which thing did not actually happen on this day.

Read a fuller description of this activity and other variations at https://martinabex.com/2018/02/27/today-in-history-engage-students-with-a-simple-critical-thinking-activity-in-the-target-language/

Title: Formative Assessment in a Proficiency-Based Classroom
Body:

From http://www.creativelanguageclass.com/

Read a short but informative and thoughtful blog post about formative assessment and its role in a proficiency-based classroom here: http://www.creativelanguageclass.com/formative-assessments/

Here is a great metaphor from the post: "In real life, if my goal is to play well in a tennis match, I would not play a match every day. I need some practice and coaching to improve before the next match. Then I have the chance to try something (take a risk!) new before I try it in a match."

If you have your students do a project as part of your next unit, is that project-based learning? According to blogger Laura Sexton, it is not. Read her recent blog post explaining what project-based learning (PBL) really is, what it's not, and how you can get started: http://www.secondaryspanishspace.com/2018/03/project-based-learning-in-spanish.html
