Title: Electronic Village Online: Classroom-based Research for Professional Development
Body:

From http://evosessions.pbworks.com/w/page/10708587/What%20is%20EVO

The Electronic Village Online (EVO) is a set of online discussions and workshops that takes place every year from mid-January to mid-February, under the auspices of TESOL's CALL Interest Section.

The 2018 EVO on Classroom-based research for professional development will be the final event of the International Festival of Teacher-research in ELT (2017–18). Registration will start on 1st January 2018, with participants first going to a 'While-waiting warm-up page' (not yet open), before Week 1 activities begin on 14th January. EVO activities last until the end of Week 5 on 17th February. There may also be some final presentations by participants online in March. Participation will be absolutely free.

This EVO Project, led by a team of volunteer teacher educators and supported by several teacher associations, will provide a hands-on introduction to inquiry-based teacher development, especially (though not exclusively) for teachers working in difficult circumstances (large classes, low-resource classrooms, etc.). The five-week workshop will take participants through different stages of teacher-research, engaging them in practical activities to gradually build their confidence in teacher-research.

For more details on how you can participate, go to http://classroombasedresearch.weebly.com/evo2018.html

Sign the Stars Anywhere on Earth with the First International Astronomy Dictionary for Deaf Communities
The encyclopedic list includes more than 40 space terms ranging from the Moon to exoplanet
By Mika McKinnon
December 11, 2017

It’s been a long time coming, but the international deaf community is finally getting a comparative dictionary to help translate astronomical terms, Mike Wall reports for Space.com.

Organized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the encyclopedic dictionary adds on to previous efforts—including existing 300-term dictionaries in English, French, and Spanish, and projects like Scotland’s impressive 2013 effort to develop signs to describe the solar system.

While the new international dictionary includes just 47 terms, the resource has compiled the signs in multiple languages, including German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese and Polish.

Title: Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad Video: Learn All About Ethiopia!
Body:

Eighteen (18) American teachers collaborated this past summer to produce a highly informative and entertaining video about Ethiopia thanks to their experiences abroad through the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) program.

The video opens with the teachers' contribution to the five question challenge, a world-wide internet curriculum phenomenon, and then features discoveries from their experiences learning about the Wolaita culture. Curriculum units will accompany each section of the video so that teachers can focus on areas that interest them and can adapt them for K-12 settings.

The video is available at https://youtu.be/klYl6MUYmuc

Title: US Census Begins Counting Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu, and Bengali Speakers

The US census is finally counting how many people speak Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu, and Bengali
by Preeti Varathan and Dan Kopf
December 10, 2017

As of last week, the US Census Bureau is taking stock of just how many people in the US speak Tamil—along with Punjabi, Telugu, and Bengali.

Historically, the way the US census tracked South Asians was messy and often inaccurate—not tracking them at all or confusing them for white. But their ranks in the US have been growing.

...Not including English, Bengali is the most-spoken language in India after Hindi, and is the main language of Bangladesh. Telugu and Tamil are among the most popular languages in south India. Globally, Tamil is spoken by over 70 million people, though in the US, only 250,000 or so people speak it. While Punjabi is most popular in Pakistan, globally, it’s almost as widely spoken as Italian.
