Title: Webinar: The Backwards Flip: Designing Russian Courses for Advanced Proficiency

The Backwards Flip: Designing Russian Courses for Advanced Proficiency
December 6, 2017
Instructor: Thomas Garza

Bringing learners of Russian to Advanced levels of functional proficiency — especially in the narrow context of a university course or high school curriculum — requires instructors to design curricula that take maximum advantage of the limited hours of classroom instruction to develop communicative skills through interaction. This webinar will demonstrate that by beginning with the desired outcomes for a class, the instructor can design a curriculum that moves the learner toward these goals. Such curricula can then be executed in a flipped environment that maximizes meaning interaction in class. The result is a course that is more satisfying for both learners and teachers, without sacrificing content or performance outcomes.

Title: Chinese Authentic Resource: Luoji Siwei
Body:

John Pasden writes, "I want to share a WeChat account I’ve found interesting called 罗辑思维 (a little play on what sounds like “Logical Thinking,” since the host’s surname is Luo). It’s not a podcast about formal logic; the topic is all kinds of useful ideas and thoughts on modern society, with a healthy sprinkling of issues related to entrepreneurship. It’s well-suited to advanced learners, and it has the following key advantages:

• "Every audio post is only 60 seconds long (called 罗胖60秒). No 'listening marathons' here.
• Every audio post has a nicely organized transcript (numbered points!) just below it.
• Yes, there is some salesy content, but the main topics are still interesting and the sales messages are short and easy to ignore.
• 罗胖‘s voice is clear and he is easy to listen to.
• His material is a good example of Chinese content marketing, if you’re into that sort of thing."
