Bilingualism and Deafness: On Language Contact in the Bilingual Acquisition of Sign Language and Written Language
By Carolina Plaza-Pust
Published by de Gruyter

This book examines sociolinguistic, educational and psycholinguistic factors that shape the path to sign bilingualism in deaf individuals and contributes to a better understanding of the specific characteristics of a type of bilingualism that is neither territorial nor commonly the result of parent-to-child transmission. The evolution of sign bilingualism at the individual level is discussed from a developmental linguistics perspective on the basis of a longitudinal investigation of deaf learners' bilingual acquisition of German sign language (DGS) and German.

The case studies included in this volume offer unique insights into bilingual deaf learners’ sign language and written language productions, and the sophisticated nature of the bilingual competence they attain. Commonalities and differences between sign bilingual language development in deaf learners and language development in other language acquisition scenarios are identified on the basis of a dynamic model of change in the evolution of (learner) language, with a focus on the role of language contact in the organization of multilingual knowledge and the scope of inter- and intra-individual variation in learner grammars. In many respects, as becomes apparent throughout the chapters of this work, sign bilingualism represents not only a challenge but also a resource. Given this cross-disciplinary perspective, the insights on bilingualism and deafness in this volume will be of interest to a wide range of researchers and professionals.

Foreign Language Education and its Cross-Curricular Links
Edited by Marek Krawiec
Published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing

This volume focuses on a variety of aspects of foreign language learning and teaching. From a theoretical perspective, it explores the multidimensional character of language classes and delineates ways of developing students’ knowledge and skills, according to current educational conceptions and postulates.

The book is divided into four parts, dealing with such notions as foreign language teaching and learning, ICT in foreign language didactics, intercultural components of language education, and CLIL in the contemporary language class. It will be useful to individuals who find the issue of foreign language teaching and learning, and its cross-curricular character, interesting.

How to revive Massachusetts’ first language
S.I. Rosenbaum
March 26, 2017

Those whose ancestors have always spoken English, the dominant tongue of global commerce, might not grasp how important it is for a language to have even a few fluent speakers, rather than none. Linguists estimate that more than 40 percent of the world’s languages are vulnerable to extinction within a generation. Around the world, indigenous people are fighting to preserve their dwindling languages. Reviving a language that had no native speakers left, as in the case of Wampanoag, is still harder. The barriers [Jessie Little Doe] Baird and her collaborators have encountered — beyond the logistical challenges, there are moral and ethical ones — typify the difficulties facing all the world’s threatened languages.
