Title: Become an Oral Proficiency Interview Tester
Body:

From https://www.actfl.org/professional-development/training-certification/ilr-opi-candidate-application

ACTFL is seeking language professionals to serve as part-time language testers. The Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is a nationally recognized method of assessing spoken language proficiency. The test assesses what a speaker can do with the language rather than focusing on the structures and abstract vocabulary that a speaker knows. The test is administered over the telephone by an ACTFL Certified Tester and rated (graded) by a second Certified Tester.

ACTFL has space available in upcoming training sessions for native speakers of the following languages: Afrikaans, Arabic-Libyan, Armenian, Assyrian, Baluchi, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Burmese, Chechen, Danish, Dhivehi, Dutch, Finnish, Fon, Fula-Toucouleur, Greek, Hmong, Icelandic, Kashmiri, Kazakh, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Kuwaiti, Lingala, Luganda, Malayam, Mandingo-Bambara, Mossi, Norwegian, Pahari, Quechua, Sindhi, Sinhalese, Slovenian, Tamazight, Tibetan, Tigrinya, Turkmen, Uighur, and Zulu.

Title: Robert Panara to Be Featured on a Stamp
Body:

From http://about.usps.com/news/national-releases/2017/pr17_012.htm

Robert Panara: Teacher and Pioneer of Deaf Studies to be Immortalized on a Stamp
March 15, 2017

The Postal Service’s 16th stamp in the Distinguished Americans series honors Robert Panara (1920-2014), an influential teacher and a pioneer in the field of Deaf Studies. He inspired generations of students with his powerful use of American Sign Language to convey works of literature. At age 10, Panara was profoundly deafened after contracting spinal meningitis, which damaged his auditory nerves.

Panara taught English for two decades, beginning in 1948, at Gallaudet College (now University), in Washington, DC. In 1967, he helped found the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) and became its first deaf faculty member. He taught English to both deaf and hearing students at NTID, part of the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York State for the next 20 years.

The two-ounce Forever stamp features a photograph of Panara signing the word “respect.” The issuance coincides with the 200th anniversary of the founding in 1817 of the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, CT — marking the beginning of formal education for deaf students in America.

Title: Blog Post: Things that Kill Americans but not Germans, and Vice Versa
Body:

Your InterCom editor’s family had a teenage guest from Kazakhstan several decades ago who noted, “At home, I would get a cold and then possibly die if I walked around outside barefoot, but here I can walk barefoot with you all in your backyard because it works differently here in America.” I’ve always admired her approach to examining her culturally-ingrained beliefs while maintaining her respect for her parents’ and grandparents’ wisdom.

In this recent blog post, an American expat living in Germany describes similar contrasts between German and American beliefs: whether it’s safe to leave food at room temperature overnight, for example, or to open all the windows in your home to let a good breeze circulate on a stuffy day: http://bhejl.blogspot.com/2017/03/things-that-kill-americans-but-not.html

Title: Martia Dementia 2017
Body:

From http://bcpublishers.blogspot.com

It’s March Madness - people everywhere are engaging in the popular pastime of betting on the outcome of the men’s college basketball tournament in the United States. Meanwhile, Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers' are running their third annual Martia Dementia contest. The contest has two components, a bracket and a survey. Here are details:

Bracket: “You will need to download a bracket from below, when it's made available on March 6, and save it as a PDF file. Having done this, simply advance the authors of your choosing through the bracket, writing in your picks and eliminating the others, until one remains above the rest. Send the completed bracket to the email provided on the bracket.”

Survey: “To further improve your chances of winning, a survey will be available for each round (below) where you can vote for your picks or, as it gets closer to the championship, vote against any picks that might hurt your chances of winning. This aspect is separate from the bracket and not necessarily required, but actively participating in the survey betters your chances at winning.”
