March 31st and April 1st 2017

The Center for the Study of Languages & Cultures at the University of Notre Dame invites abstracts on the connections between community engagement and foreign language instruction in higher education. This conference will provide scholars and professional educators a venue to discuss research, theories, and best practices in regards to language-focused Community-Based Learning (CBL). The organizers of this conference strongly encourage submissions from scholars and educators from various different language backgrounds.

Potential paper topics include but are not limited to:

•    Community-based learning and the 5Cs (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities)
•    Community-based learning as an alternative to study abroad
•    Establishing CBL courses in languages other than Spanish or ESL
•    The role of community engagement in students’ personal and professional journeys
•    CBL-informed foreign language curriculum
•    Theoretical and pedagogical issues in designing foreign language community-based courses
•    CBL and foreign language class enrollment
•    Building partnerships between a university/college and the foreign language community
•    Providing foreign language instruction in elementary and middle schools through community engagement
•    Language-focused CBL and the empowerment of minority cultures in the community

There will be a dedicated graduate student panel.

Abstracts should be 300-350 words and submitted by December 15, 2016.

The organizers’ goal is to involve pre- and in-service teachers, teacher educators, administrators, researchers, and other professionals at all stages of their careers in a multidirectional sharing of expertise and experiences that will contribute to future exploratory practice and professional growth.

Presentation topics need not address the topic of teacher education directly; the organizers welcome proposals on anything that educators themselves would consider worthwhile for enhancing their own and their colleagues’ professional development and daily practices.

Bridging the gap between research and practice is an inevitable challenge in the field of foreign/second language teaching. TexLER unites scholars and educators from diverse contexts who strive to connect research findings to classroom practices, thus shaping the future direction of language education. TexLER welcomes research studies and practice-oriented presentations that clearly establish strong connections between theory and practice in diverse contexts. The organizers’ goal is to offer an interdisciplinary forum for all those interested in research findings with implications for the classroom as well as those interested in pedagogical approaches to language learning grounded in empirical findings.

Title: Take the Basic Online Language Design and Delivery Survey

This is an invitation to participate in the third annual survey on online language education in the USA at the post-secondary level. The Basic Online Language Design and Delivery (BOLDD) collaboratory has been in existence since 2010 and has deemed data collection on the field to be essential to the growth and improvement of the field. Results are reported only in aggregate. Without your express permission, there will be no reference to you or your institution as a respondent to this survey.

For the past two years, the survey has included sections on: institutional data, languages and their levels delivered entirely online, initiation and design issues, delivery including teaching, assessment and evaluation. This year's survey includes a section on teacher preparation among others.

Once more than ten (10) respondents have participated, there is access to various data graphs. To cite the data, one should wait until 1/15/17. Also please note the RedCap citation details that must be included to publish this data.

I was 6 or 7 years old, but I remember stopping with a jolt. Something inside me froze, too, went suddenly cold.

“I’m signing,” I said out loud. “That’s not rude.”
