Second Language Speech: Theory and Practice
By Laura Colantoni, Jeffrey Steele, and Paola Escudero
Published by Cambridge University Press

Second language acquisition has rapidly grown as a field over the past decade, as our knowledge of the ways in which children and adults learn and use a second language has become crucial for effective language teaching. In addition to this important 'applied' function, research into second language acquisition has also informed the fields of linguistics and psychology in general, as it has shed light on the differences between native and non-native models of human language and cognition. The focus of this accessible new book is second language speech - that is, how speakers perceive, process, understand and pronounce the sounds of a second language. Each chapter includes review questions, and most chapters include 'tutorial' and 'lab' sections with practical exercises based on the University of Toronto Romance Phonetics Database (available online for free). The book also has a companion website, containing illustrated answers to the exercises, scripts for running acoustic analyses and useful weblinks.

Pragmatic Issues in Specialized Communicative Contexts
Edited by Francesca Bianchi and Sara Gesuato
Published by Brill

Pragmatic Issues in Specialized Communicative Contexts illustrates how interactants systematically and effectively employ micro and macro linguistic resources and textual strategies to engage in communicative practices in such specific contexts as healthcare services, TV interpreting, film dialogue, TED talks, archaeology academic communication, student-teacher communication, and multilingual classrooms. Each contribution presents a pedagogical slant, reporting on or suggesting didactic approaches to, or applications of, pragmatic aspects of communication in SL, FL and LSP learning contexts. The topics covered and the issues addressed are all directly relevant to applied pragmatics, that is, pragmatically oriented linguistic analysis that accounts for interpersonal-transactional issues in real-life situated communication.

Title: Sixth International Conference on Immersion and Dual Language Education

Sixth International Conference on Immersion and Dual Language Education:
Connecting Research and Practice Across Contexts
October 20–22, 2016
Minneapolis, MN

Immersion and dual language education continue to evolve as highly effective program models for launching students on the road to bi- and multilingualism and intercultural competence. School-based immersion, bilingual, and dual language programs involve a minimum of 50% subject-matter schooling through a second, world, heritage, or indigenous language at the preschool and elementary levels (PreK–5/6). Secondary or post-secondary continuation programs for elementary immersion/dual language graduates include a minimum of two subject courses.

Program models include:
  One-Way Second/Foreign Language Immersion
  Co-Official/Regional Language Immersion
  Two-Way Bilingual Immersion
  One-Way Developmental Bilingual Education
  Indigenous Language Immersion

While each model targets distinct sociocultural contexts and educational needs, all embrace language, literacy, and culture development through subject-matter learning with a high degree of language intensity. Under the leadership of the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA), University of Minnesota, the Sixth International Conference on Immersion and Dual Language Education will bring these models together to engage in research-informed dialogue and professional exchange across languages, levels, learner audiences, and contexts.

Registration is now open. Visit the conference website at http://carla.umn.edu/conferences/immersion2016/ and register at http://carla.umn.edu/conferences/immersion2016/registration.html

Title: Presentation: Language Economics and Prestige Planning for Minority Languages in Postcolonial Settings

Language Economics and Prestige Planning for Minority Languages in Postcolonial Settings
Nkonko M. Kamwangamalu, PhD
Center for Applied Linguistics
September 14, 2016 3:30 - 5:00pm EDT | Washington, DC

This paper addresses the perennial issue of how to promote minoritized languages alongside former colonial languages as the mediums of instruction in schools in postcolonial settings, with a focus on Africa (OAU, 2000). Traditionally, studies investigating this issue have concentrated mostly on what Haarmann (1990) has termed the production of language planning (LP), but they have hardly paid any attention to the reception of LP. The former concerns official policy declaration about the status of languages in a polity, while the latter concerns the attitude, positive or negative, of the target community toward the policy.

The paper breaks with the traditional approach by focusing on the missing link between an education through the medium of a minoritized language on the one hand, and economic outcomes of that education on the other.

Title: Oregon ELL Organizers Summit

Oregon ELL Organizers Summit
August 24, 2016
5:00-8:30 PM
Woodburn, OR

This event will convene ELL parents and organizers for an evening of discussion, workshops, and strategies.

English language learners (ELL) are one of Oregon’s fastest growing student populations, whose families and communities have made significant contributions to our economy. When provided with quality English language instruction, ELL students can outperform state averages in high school graduation, college attendance and college completion. These students represent tremendous potential for Oregon to achieve key education and workforce goals.

Yet Oregon’s 57,376 ELL students are facing an education crisis shaped by a generation of poor academic performance and graduation rates. Our state policies have historically lacked the necessary urgency and focus to ensure all our children receive a quality education.
