Title: Let's Learn Latin! Workshop for Elementary and Middle School Teachers
Body:

From ascaniusyci.org/teachers/LLL/wburg16.htm

Let's Learn Latin will introduce elementary and middle school teachers to the world of Latin and the ancient Romans through a variety of engaging approaches. Teachers get to play the role of students, learning the material through the same activities and lessons that they will be able to use in their own classrooms.

Participants will enjoy learning the basics of Latin, using a colorful, interesting, kid-friendly text called Minimus, richly supplemented by effective and innovative activities to practice the material. Other topics include Latin vocabulary, word roots, and Roman culture and mythology. No previous experience with Latin is needed.

Let’s Learn Latin! will take place in Williamsburg, Virginia, on March 18. For full details go to http://ascaniusyci.org/teachers/LLL/wburg16.htm.

Title: Editorial: Structural Changes to Improve World Language Programs
Body:

From languagemagazine.com/?p=125227

Joaquín Fernández-Castro writes, “What can schools do to improve their world language programs? There are three types of structural changes that can lead to major improvements and help students to achieve their full potential as global citizens.

“Change the minimum requirement for languages and develop strategies to enhance it.
“Implement early language acquisition, flexible placement, and acceleration opportunities to meet each student’s gifts and abilities.
“Offer diploma incentives for students learning two or more languages, establish total immersion abroad, and develop endowment support for world languages.

“The following recommendations are based on a comparative analysis of the best world language programs among the top ten public charter and magnet schools and top ten private independent schools in the U.S. according to the rankings of the Washington Post, US News and World Report, and Prep Review from 2010 to 2015.”

Read on for details explanations of proposed structural changes: http://languagemagazine.com/?p=125227

From us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=12f26b83017c8223bcb1241ee&id=b5fe46587b&e=5a6206be74

The Partnerships in Indigenous Knowledge and Digital Literacies Project has created a website where you'll find resources for teaching languages with homemade story-based games that run on iPhones. The project was led by Jon Reinhardt and Susan Penfield and began as a partnership between CERCLL and the American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI), with funding from a National Science Foundation Cyberlearning grant. There will be a workshop on using these resources in the second week of June this year.

Title: The “American Empire”: What Can the Classics Tell Us?
Body:

From www.ttbook.org

TTBOOK is a nationally-syndicated radio show that produces podcasts around a given theme, such as “Are Humans Innately Good?” or “Revenge of the Nerds.” The theme for February is “Why the Classics Matter.” Here is a summary of February’s podcast offerings:

“There's a lot of handwringing these days about the American Empire. Is it doomed to come crashing down the way the Roman Empire did? We'll find some unexpected lessons from Ancient Rome and even earlier, the collapse of Bronze Age civilization. We also celebrate the wisdom of the ancient classics, and hear how one philosopher teaches Plato to Palestinian students.”
