International Programs Specialist
Center for Applied Second Language Studies
Term: 1.0 FTE for 12 months, renewable annually pending funding and performance
Salary: $40,000-$50,000
Anticipated start date: July 1, 2016

The International Programs Specialist provides support to students in the Oregon International Internship Program (OIIP) who are studying at the University of Oregon, living in a home stay situation with local families, and completing internships in local Eugene-Springfield area schools. The International Programs Specialist also provides support to CASLS’ strategic initiatives related to curriculum and program development. Specifically, you will:

  •  Assist students through the program application process and conduct interviews with students as part of their application
  •  Work with the Office of International Affairs to secure visas and ensure that students comply with visa regulations during their participation in the program
  •  Vet home stay families in consultation with the East Asia Programs Director
  •  Provide problem solving and support to the students and their home stay families
  •  Respond to student inquiries regarding American culture, the U.S. educational system, and their home stay living environment
  •  Respond to teacher inquiries regarding the performance of the student placed in an internship experience with them
  •  Coordinate welcome and farewell events
  •  Provide orientation to students, mentor teachers, and home stay families in consultation with the East Asia Programs Director
  •  Assist in developing curriculum and delivering instruction related to an intercultural communications and pragmatics course

To join our team, you should have (minimum qualifications):

  •  Master’s in field related to international education or a foreign language from an accredited institution
  •  At least two years’ experience coordinating higher education programs and/or student programs
  •  Love working with students and have experience providing support and guidance to undergraduate students
  •  Ability to work effectively with postsecondary and secondary educators, administrators, and students from diverse backgrounds

It’s even better if you have (preferred experience):

  •  Commitment to cross-cultural understanding
  •  Proficiency in a language other than English
  •  Ability to solve problems creatively
  •  Experience providing support and guidance to international students
  •  Knowledge of second language acquisition and/or classroom teaching experience

New this year: the NYS TESOL 46th Annual Conference welcomes presentation threads. A thread is a group of 2-3 connected presentations. Presentations may be any type except posters. This group of presentations explores 2-3 different aspects of a single topic, or 2-3 consecutive parts of a larger topic.

The proposal deadline is May 30th, 2016.

The University of Toronto will host the 2016 Slavic Linguistics Society meeting September 23-25, 2016. The Slavic Linguistics Society (SLS) is a professional organization devoted to the systematic and scholarly study of the Slavic languages. The organization brings together academics from Europe and North America (and elsewhere) through an annual conference that alternates between North American and European institutions.

The organizers invite individual abstract submissions and panel proposals on all topics and frameworks within Slavic linguistics.

The deadline for abstracts has been extended to March 15, 2016.

The 2016 annual COFLT Spring Conference will take place at Lewis and Clark University in Portland, OR on March 12, 2016. The conference is hosted jointly with Language in Motion Northwest.

The annual COFLT Spring Conference is following a workshops- only format this year. When you register you will choose one of four full-day workshop tracks:

  Social Justice in the Language Classroom
