Ethics in Applied Linguistics Research: Language Researcher Narratives
Edited by Peter I. De Costa
Published by Routledge, Taylor & Francis

Ethics in Applied Linguistics Research explores how ethical issues are negotiated in different areas of language research, illustrating for graduate students in applied linguistics the ethical dilemmas they might encounter in the research methodology classroom and how they might be addressed. This volume serves to demystify the complex ethical decision-making process by its accounts of renowned researchers’ ethical practices as they transpired on the ground and how they negotiated externally imposed research codes. The collection investigates and records the research practices of prominent international applied linguists from a wide variety of subdisciplines, including discourse analysis, educational linguistics, heritage and minority education, language planning and policy, language and technology, literacy, second language acquisition, second and foreign language pedagogy, and sociolinguistics. By problematizing research practices that draw on a range of methodologies, Ethics in Applied Linguistics Research puts front and center the urgency to prepare the next generation of applied linguists with the tools and knowledge necessary to conduct ethical research in an increasingly globalized and networked world.

Title: Call for Papers: Purdue Languages and Cultures Conference
Body:

From http://linguistlist.org/issues/26/26-4978.html

Purdue Languages and Cultures Conference
March 4-6, 2016
West Lafayette, Indiana

The Purdue Linguistics Association (PLA), The School of Languages and Cultures Graduate Student Committee, and the English as a Second Language Graduate Organization (ESL Go!) at Purdue University are happy to announce the unification of three symposia that were previously held separately on Purdue's campus. Our aim, through this new project, is to create an environment that supports collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects related to the fields of study in language and language use. The fact that academia has become more interdisciplinary in recent years is a result of the complex issues facing modern societies. For this reason, the conference has chosen as its first theme: Complexity, Change, and Society.

The organizers invite submissions of original research papers from all areas of linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, second language studies, and cultural studies of any language or language group to be presented in 20-minute talks or posters (this will be announced at the time the submission decision is sent).

Call deadline: December 22, 2015

Sixth International Conference on Immersion and Dual Language Education: Connecting Research and Practice Across Contexts
October 20–22, 2016
Hyatt Regency Hotel
Minneapolis, MN

CARLA is currently seeking proposals for papers, discussion sessions, laptop poster sessions, and symposia on aspects of immersion and dual language education related to four conference strands:

Strand 1: Immersion Pedagogy and Assessment

Title: Tea with BVP at ACTFL

We’ve already written about Bill VanPatten’s new radio show, Tea with BVP (http://caslsintercom.uoregon.edu/content/20191 and http://caslsintercom.uoregon.edu/content/20333). The show usually takes place on Thursdays at 3:00 PM Eastern Time. Last week the topic was “Does Explicit Language Teaching Do Anything?” This coming week, however, the show will not take place on Thursday, since the show hosts will be traveling to the ACTFL Convention. Instead, the show will take place live from the convention at 3:00 PM Eastern Time (12:00 PM Pacific Time) on Saturday, November 21.

Title: New York City Introduces Language Program Legislation
Body:

From http://languagemagazine.com/?p=124741

Council members have called on the Department of Education, “to amend the administrative code of the city of New York in relation to foreign language courses offered in New York city public schools.” This new legislation would require tracking of the number of students in dual-language and foreign-language programs including grade levels and detailed reports on instruction. Council member Mark Levine, who is one of the bill’s biggest advocates, published a document on New York’s current language education status, arguing that more needs to be done to create bilingual teachers and provide foreign language education access to lower income areas. “The highest demand for dual language programs has been from middle-income, English-speaking families,” Levine told Capital New York. “The Department of Education is ramping up outreach to low-income families but that is still a big challenge. Dual language classes are one of the best solutions to school integration that we’ve seen.”

Yuridia Pena, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, said in a statement that the department is currently working to create more dual-language programs; “As a former English Language Learner and a bilingual New Yorker, the Chancellor understands and is a strong advocate of the importance of an education that values and celebrates the learning of world languages,” she said in a statement. “We share the commitment of the New York City Council and other elected officials to expand our students access to world languages in elementary grades.” Council member Levine is fighting to speed up increased access to high-quality dual-language education, working with city schools chancellor Carmen Fariña and promoting language learning through his own channels.
