Americans can and should be learning African languages
by Evan Fleischer
November 10, 2015

More Americans should learn to speak languages native to the African continent. There is a small, statistical base of speakers in the country—according to the 2011 US census, 884,660 individuals aged five years or older already speak a language originating in Africa. But we could have so much more.

Arguably, the most useful, indigenous African languages for Americans to learn are Yoruba (primarily spoken in Nigeria), Xhosa (South Africa), Swahili (Kenya, Tanzania, and much of East Africa), and Amharic (mainly Ethiopia). Four languages out of approximately 2,000 on a continent of 1.1 billion—but together, they share 210 million speakers.

Title: Russian Overseas Flagship Program: Accepting Applications
Body:

American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS would like to announce the opening of the application for the 2016-2017 Russian Overseas Flagship Program. The application deadline is January 14, 2016.

The Russian Overseas Flagship Program was established in 2004 to address the critical need for U.S. professionals able to speak, read, understand, and write in Russian at the highest levels of functional proficiency. The program is open to advanced-level learners of Russian who are committed to attaining "professional" or "distinguished-level" language proficiency (ILR 3, 3+, 4/ACTFL "Superior" or “Distinguished” levels) through an intensive nine-month language training program tailored to their professional interests and academic specialization.

The Russian Overseas Flagship Program prepares U.S. students to be able to communicate in Russian at the highest levels of functional proficiency. The program is located at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The academic program is structured around an integrated curriculum featuring classes in contemporary mass media, language and culture, expository writing, and advanced oral communication. Students are offered twenty hours per week of intensive language training and tutoring as well as content courses in any major at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, professional internships with local companies and organizations, and guided excursions. Optional Kazakh language and culture classes are available to interested students. A U.S. resident director and several local administrative staff provide 24/7 onsite logistical support to students. Participants receive academic credit through Bryn Mawr College. All participants live with Russian-speaking host families, where they can become fully immersed in Kazakh daily life.

Applicants are encouraged to apply for Boren Awards (www.borenawards.org), which may be used to support participation on the Russian Overseas Flagship Program.

At-large applicants (i.e., those who are not enrolled in the Russian Domestic Flagship programs) must satisfy the following requirements:
-  Have a Bachelor's, or higher, degree before the beginning of the program in August 2016,
-  Demonstrate ILR Level 2 or higher Russian in oral proficiency and at least two other skills (reading, listening, writing), with the fourth skill no less than ILR 1+, and
-  Have at least six weeks of prior experience studying Russian in Russia or a Russian-speaking country.

Interested at-large applicants should contact Flagship Program Assistant Derek Groom (dgroom@americancouncils.org) by December 18, 2015, to request an online application account. Completed online applications, including all supporting documents, such as transcripts and letters of reference, must be submitted by 2 p.m. Eastern time, January 14, 2016.

Title: Custom Keyboard: GreekKeys 2015
Body:

From https://classicalstudies.org/publications-and-research/about-greekkeys-2015

GreekKeys 2015 is the latest revision of a custom polytonic Greek keyboard program with accompanying fonts that has long been useful to many scholars, teachers, and students of the ancient and medieval Greek worlds. GreekKeys fonts and keyboards provide easy access to many specialized characters (e.g., for metrics, epigraphy, and papyrology) that are absent from most system fonts and that would otherwise have to be entered in roundabout or obscure ways.

If you need only the standard polytonic Greek characters, you may wish to try the free fonts and keyboards that come with Windows OS and Mac OS X. GreekKeys is intended for those with particular scholarly needs and for those who appreciate a simple scheme for the location of the accent characters.

GreekKeys 2015 is free to members of the Society for Classical Studies. Individuals who are not members of the SCS must first create an account on the SCS web site, but then may buy GreekKeys for $20.00 through the purchase page.

Title: Open Access Resource: Latinum Electronicum
Body:

From http://www.degruyter.com/view/db/latinummi

Latinum Electronicum
Edited by Irene Burch, Simone Hiltscher, and Rudolf Wachter, Rudolf
Published by de Gruyter

The Latinum Electronicum is an interactive Latin course which teaches the basic knowledge of Latin. The course was developed within the framework of the “Virtual Campus Switzerland” in three languages – German, French, and Italian. In 23 lessons, students can learn Latin and also prepare for the qualification in Latin exam. Animated graphics facilitate the comprehension of those grammatical topics that are especially challenging: for example, the ablativus absolutus and six other syntactic phenomena are described through the use of example sentences which are analyzed and translated before the eyes of the learner.

Title: Controlling Time in Your Classroom
Body:

It’s been years since your InterCom editor taught in her own classroom, but she still has anxiety dreams about running out of time in her class to do the really cool activity because she took too long at the beginning of class to go over the day’s objectives, or to explain the activity. Here, from the Throw Away Your Textbook! blog, are some very practical suggestions for taking control of how time is spent in your classroom: http://www.throwawayyourtextbook.com/blog/controlling-time
