Title: Book: Revitalizing Minority Languages

Revitalizing Minority Languages: New Speakers of Breton, Yiddish and Lemko
By Michael Hornsby
Published by Palgrave Macmillan

In recent decades the 'death' of minority languages has attracted the attention of journalists, scholars and the general public and now features in various discourses about the decline of ecological and cultural diversity due to globalization. Many minority languages are undergoing revitalization (mainly through educational initiatives) and, as a result, some of these languages can demonstrate a slowing down in the rate of decline in the number of speakers. This has led to the appearance, in many instances, of so-called 'new' speakers, that is, speakers who have acquired a minority language outside the traditional conduits of family and/or community. This book examines the background to this phenomenon and investigates the mechanisms and processes by which new speakers have appeared in Breton, Yiddish and Lemko linguistic settings, all of whom demonstrate similar struggles and successes in their attempts to use their adopted languages in a meaningful way.

Strategies for Second Language Listening: Current Scenarios and Improved Pedagogy
By Suzanne Graham and Denise Santos
Published by Palgrave Macmillan

Listening is generally perceived as a difficult and sometimes neglected skill by language teachers and learners. This volume aims to help second language teachers to teach listening in a principled way. It provides a detailed overview of research into effective second language listening and offers insight into the role of learner strategies. The book also examines teachers' beliefs and practices regarding listening and listening pedagogy, providing an analysis of textbook materials for second language listening. With suggested practical activities for the teaching of listening as a process, not a product, the book is an invaluable resource for the development of more effective listening, and will appeal to researchers and practitioners of second language learning alike.

Title: 3rd National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language
Body:

From http://3symposiumshl.weebly.com/

The Third Annual Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (SSHL) will be held at the University of Oregon February 18th-20th, 2016. Professor Claudia Holguín Mendoza, Director of the UO’s Spanish as a Heritage Language Program, invites you to participate in this community-oriented academic meeting. Activities include panels with theoretical and pedagogical proposals, sharing of experiences teaching and learning Spanish as a Heritage Language, workshops by Oregon dual immersion high school educators, workshops on community outreach, and a Creative Writing Contest.

The Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (SSHL) is an intellectual forum for the discussion of both the variable linguistic reality of Spanish heritage bilingualism in the United States (and elsewhere) and the diverse pedagogical needs of students of Spanish as a heritage language. Researchers and educators in K-12 and higher education share theoretical and practical approaches to the study of Spanish as a heritage language from the perspectives of various disciplines, including Second Language Acquisition, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, and Applied Linguistics, among others. The SSHL provides a space to bridge the gap between research findings and the praxis of heritage language teaching, allowing participants to collaborate effectively towards the implementation of pedagogies that allow heritage learners not only to develop their language proficiency but also to reflect on their own identity formation within a context of validation and empowerment.
