Title: Call for Proposals: CALICO Journal Special Issue

We are inviting proposals for the special issue 34.1 of the CALICO Journal to be published in January 2017. With this call for proposals we are looking for (a) guest editor(s). If you are interested in becoming guest editor, please submit a proposal that should have the following rubrics:

(1) name(s) and affiliation(s) of the guest editor(s)
(2) topic of the special issue
(3) rationale for the topic (1 page maximum)
(4) production timeline (containing such dates as deadlines for CfPs, authors, reviewers, revisions)
(5) short CV of each guest editor (with particular emphasis on published research on the topic of the special issue and editing experience) (2 pages maximum per guest editor)
(6) draft Call for Papers for the special issue

We are particularly interested in proposals on the following topic areas: CALL in extracurricular/extramural language learning; Conversation Analysis and Discourse Analysis in CALL; and learner-computer interaction and learner-computer dialogue. All proposals will be evaluated by CJ’s editorial board and proposals on other topics will be considered.

Informal enquiries as well as the formal proposal can be sent to the editors Mathias Schulze and Bryan Smith at calicojournal@equinoxpub.com. The submission deadline for formal proposals is March 1, 2015.

The special issues of the CALICO Journal present original research on emerging discourses in CALL and on new developments in its sub-areas. Recent and planned special issues of the CALICO Journal:

• CJ 32.3 (2015): Hampel & Stickler: Qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to research in CALL

Strategies for Building a Successful Polish Language Program

Professional Development Workshop for Instructors of Polish
May 2, 2015
The Polish Language Program of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures
The University of Chicago, Chicago, IL

Organized in collaboration with the Center for East European and Russian/Eurasian Studies (CEERES) and the Chicago Language Center (CLC) at the University of Chicago, this workshop seeks to bring together instructors of Polish at the high school and secondary education levels to discuss the specific challenges facing Polish language classrooms in the context of technological development, student recruitment, and content-based instruction. The workshop will provide opportunities for collaboration and the exchange of ideas as well as strategies for strengthening Polish language programs.

Registration is free and all meals provided with generous support of CEERES and the CLC. THIS WORKSHOP IS CPDU ELIGIBLE.

CALL FOR PRESENTATION PROPOSALS
We invite presentations on these topics:
- Integration of technology and multimedia
- Content-based instruction at all levels
- Strategies for recruitment

Presentations should be limited to 20 minutes.

We invite all attendees to apply to present at the workshop, however, presenting is not required to participate in the workshop.

- a presentation abstract of 50-75 words

Cross-Sector Collaboration Promises Progress

The Language Enterprise, as coined by William Rivers, director of the Joint National Committee for Languages and the National Council for International Studies (JNCL-NCLIS), in his 2013 presentation “Language Enterprise in the U.S.: The Public and Private Sector,” is a collaborative partnership of education, private enterprise, and government in support of world languages and world-language education.

The effectiveness of this partnership has been recently demonstrated in the U.S. by the Many Languages, One World Essay Contest and Global Youth Forum at the United Nations and by the British Academy’s language program and related government and private-sector initiatives in the UK.
