Task-Based Language Learning – Insights from and for L2 Writing
Edited by Heidi Byrnes and Rosa M. Manchón
Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company

The book seeks to enlarge the theoretical scope, research agenda, and practices associated with TBLT in a two-way dynamic, by exploring how insights from writing might reconfigure our understanding of tasks and, in turn, how work associated with TBLT might benefit the learning and teaching of writing. In order to enrich the domain of task and to advance the educational interests of TBLT, it adopts both a psycholinguistic and a textual meaning-making orientation. Following an issues-oriented introductory chapter, Part I of the volume explores tenets, methods, and findings in task-oriented theory and research in the context of writing; the chapters in Part II present empirical findings on task-based writing by investigating how writing tasks are implemented, how writers differentially respond to tasks, and how tasks can contribute to language development. A coda chapter summarizes the volume's contribution and suggests directions for advancing TBLT constructs and research agendas.

Acquiring Pragmatics: Social and cognitive perspectives
By Sandrine Zufferey
Published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group

Acquiring Pragmatics offers a comprehensive synthesis of state-of-the-art research on the acquisition of pragmatics. It introduces the current topics of research in theoretical pragmatics and explores the issues they raise for language acquisition research and the new experimental designs which have been developed to address them.

While each chapter covers each topic in depth, it also places a strong emphasis on the underlying methodological aspects of each issue, which will help the reader to develop their own experimental designs. Key topics covered include:

The interfaces between pragmatics and language acquisition
The social aspects of pragmatic competence
The cognitive aspects of pragmatic competence
The acquisition of pragmatics in autistic spectrum disorders and second language acquisition

Acquiring Pragmatics is key reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying pragmatics and language acquisition.
