Body:

From https://networks.h-net.org/node/28765/discussions/50947/podcast-swahili-poetry-abdilatif-abdalla-africa-past-and-present

Episode 85 of Africa Past and Present -- the podcast about African history, culture, and politics -- is now available at http://afripod.aodl.org

In this episode, Abdilatif Abdalla, the best-known Swahili poet and independent Kenya’s first political prisoner, discusses poetry as a political instrument and as an academic field; publication prospects for African poets; and how poetry enabled him to survive three years of solitary confinement, after which he spent 22 years in exile. The interview ends with Abdalla reciting his poem "Siwati" ("I Will Never Abandon My Convictions").

Title: UT Austin Symposium for African Writers 2014

UT Austin Symposium for African Writers 2014: Taiye Selasi, Sofia Samatar, Maaza Mengiste, Laila Lalami, & Nnedi Okorafor
December 2-3, 2014
University of Texas-Austin

In the last few years, some of the most powerful, popular, and innovative African writing has come from writers living in the United States. Yet to describe writers like Taiye Selasi, Maaza Mengiste, Sofia Samatar, Nnedi Okorafor, or Laila Lalami as either “American” or “African” writers would be to miss what is most vital about their work, which is both and neither, and gloriously so. Even terms like “exile,” “immigrant,” or “diaspora” don’t capture the reality of writers whose literary horizons are not bound by their birthplace, passport, or skin color. And perhaps they do not wish to be captured!

In December, the University of Texas will welcome these writers to Austin to read and discuss each other’s work.

Title: Activity Idea: Coffee House
Body:

From the NCLRC Arabic K-12 Bulletin:

"[T]each your students (and others at school) about the role, appearance, and flavor of coffee in Arab culture by creating your own "coffee house" (or cart). You can bring in supplies to produce Turkish or other coffee from the Arab world, practice selling and ordering in Arabic, and learn more about "coffee culture" through discussion. If your students are too young to drink coffee (or you're afraid what will happen if they do!), have them set up a coffee stand or cart to sell to older students or faculty and staff at school. They can teach the community about a fascinating (and delicious) part of Arab culture."
