TitleNational Task Force on Early Childhood Education for Hispanics convening
Body
Editor's Note: I don't know if this task force has already formed or not, but I
thought the information might be of use to some.

During the summer of 2004, the National Task Force on Early Childhood
Education for Hispanics will be established to identify major issues in early
childhood education for Hispanic children in the United States and to make
recommendations for action. Launched with a grant from the Foundation for
Child Development, the task force will focus on the educational needs of
Hispanic children from birth through the primary grades. The task force's
chair will be Dr. Eugene E. Garcia, Dean of the College of Education and
Vice President for School-University Partnerships at Arizona State University
(ASU). Members of the task force, which is to be housed at ASU, will include
policymakers, practitioners, corporate, community, strategic thinkers,
researchers, and educators of early childhood educators and teachers. The
task force will be convened for an initial period of two years, at the end of
which time it will issue a major report on its findings and recommendations
for action. It is projected that the task force would meet once per year, with the
initial meeting planned for the Fall, 2004.

The task force is being created for several reasons. Available evidence
indicates that the much lower levels of academic achievement in high school
and college of Hispanic students compared to Whites and Asian Americans
are heavily related to the large differences in achievement that exist at the
end of the primary grades. Moreover, the lower levels of achievement of
Hispanics in the primary grades are related in part to substantial differences
in school readiness at the beginning of kindergarten between Hispanics and
their White and Asian counterparts. Thus, there is a pressing need to
improve educational outcomes and share these outcomes with the greater
community, including an emphasis in the Latino community.
