The website brings together major European projects about World War I material and put this information beside personal stories and other unofficial histories from the time period. The online archives continue to grow as more collections are added and more personal histories are collected via the family history roadshows. Come celebrate at the newly restored German American Friendship Garden on the National Mall on April 11, 2014.

Created in 1983 on the initiative of US President Ronald Reagan and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl to mark the tricentennial of the first German immigration to the American colonies, the Friendship Garden has now been refurbished thanks to a partnership between the German Embassy Washington, the National Park Service, and German-American associations, which together will organize the festivities.

This event is free of charge and no tickets are required.

The Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik, located in Portland, Oregon, is a German summer school offered through Portland State University. It is the nation's premier German immersion program and offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, a German MA program, and a one-week German teacher training seminar.

5-week total immersion program — 12 credits - June 25 – July 31

The University of Rhode Island's "German Summer School" is located between New York and Boston, near various scenic beaches on the East Coast. We offer language and literature classes at all levels for three or six weeks between late June and early August. You can earn up to nine (transferable) college credits and also take the standard Goethe Institute Certificate Exams B1 and B2. The academic instruction is supplemented by a wide variety of language- and culture-related activities, such as workshops, films, lectures, games, and outings.

Title: German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award

To honor the work of up and coming, promising teachers, the German Embassy Washington, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), created the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award.

The prize includes a two-week professional development course in Germany, offered by the Goethe-Institut. During their stay in Germany, award recipients experience the country anew, gaining fresh stimuli on teaching techniques, culture and society, and the German language. Award winners are additionally invited to receive their prize at the annual conference of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Nominations are due by May 31, 2014.

French may be a beautiful language, but few would argue it’s the most useful, and almost nobody would argue it’s the language of the future. …

Here’s the thing: the data suggests that French language just might be the language of the future.

French isn’t mostly spoken by French people, and hasn’t been for a long time now. The language is growing fast, and growing in the fastest-growing areas of the world, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. The latest projection is that French will be spoken by 750 million people by 2050.

A study by investment bank Natixis even suggests that by that time, French could be the most-spoken language in the world, ahead of English and even Mandarin.
