Cornell University will be holding an Arabic Teachers Workshop , August 15 & 16, 2014 in Ithaca, NY.

The workshop will be open to about 20 Arabic teachers and program directors who are interested in learning about the Integrated Approach and its actual implementation in the Arabic classroom.

The two-day workshop will be led by Jonathan Featherstone, Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh; Maher Awad, Senior Lecturer of Arabic and Certified ACTFL & ILR Tester at Rice University; and Munther Younes, Reis Senior Lecturer in Arabic Language and Linguistics and Director of the Arabic Program at Cornell University.

He will also demonstrate the use of materials from the three-volume, fully-integrated textbook series 'Arabiyyat al-Naas, which he coauthored and which is due to be published by Routledge in the fall of 2013 and the spring of 2014.

Jonathan Featherstone will deliver training sessions focusing on applying the Integrated Approach to communicative reading and speaking activities and will help teachers design their own language drills.

Maher Awad will focus on issues of assessment, especially proficiency assessment, and discuss similarities and differences between the assessment tools employed in the Integrated vs. the non-integrated approaches, with special reference to the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.

Title: 2014 Chinese Guest Teacher and Trainee Program
Body:

The Chinese Guest Teacher and Trainee Program is designed to help U.S. schools develop Chinese language and culture study programs and to promote international exchange between the United States and China. Made possible through a collaboration between the College Board and Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), the program has grown to be the largest Chinese visiting teacher program in the U.S. Each year, the program serves hundreds of K–12 schools and districts nationwide and reaches tens of thousands of U.S. students.

This program provides an experienced language teacher from China to fill full-time Chinese language instruction positions in a host school or district for a period of one to three years. The guest teachers have at least three years of teaching experience, and have gone through a rigorous selection and training process before arriving at the host schools. Participating institutions are responsible for providing a partial salary to the guest teacher, and the remainder is subsidized by a stipend from Hanban.

The Guest Teacher and Trainee Program is now accepting applications for the 2014–2015 school year. To learn more and apply, go to http://professionals.collegeboard.com/k-12/awards/chinese/guest

You can also attend an online informational webinar on Wednesday, January 29.

Title: Exhibition: The Little Prince: A New York Story
Body:

From http://www.themorgan.org/exhibitions/exhibition.asp?id=90

The Little Prince: A New York Story
January 24 through April 27, 2014

Since its publication seventy years ago, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince has captivated millions of readers throughout the world. It may come as a surprise that this French tale of an interstellar traveler who comes to Earth in search of friendship and understanding was written and first published in New York City, during the two years the author spent here at the height of the Second World War.

As he prepared to leave the city to rejoin the war effort as a reconnaissance pilot, Saint-Exupéry appeared at his friend Sylvia Hamilton's door wearing his military uniform. "I'd like to give you something splendid," he said, "but this is all I have." He tossed a rumpled paper bag onto her entryway table. Inside were the manuscript and drawings for The Little Prince, which the Morgan acquired from her in 1968.

Focusing on the story's American origins, this exhibition features twenty-five of the manuscript pages—replete with crossed-out words, cigarette burns, and coffee stains—and all forty-three of the earliest versions of drawings for the book. Also on view are rare printed editions from the Morgan's collection as well as personal letters, photographs, and artifacts on loan from the Saint-Exupéry estate, private collections, and museums and libraries in France and the United States.

The Little Prince: A New York Story is the first exhibition to explore in depth the creative decisions Saint-Exupéry made as he crafted his beloved story that reminds us that what matters most can only be seen with the heart.
