Title: U.S. Officials Fail to Allay Concerns Over Accreditation Rules for Language Programs
Body: From http://chronicle.com/article/US-Officials-Fail-to-Allay/132058 U.S. Officials Fail to Allay Concerns Over Accreditation Rules for Language Programs By Karin Fischer May 31, 2012 U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials, speaking at an international-education conference here, did little on Thursday to clarify the confusion surrounding new requirements for the accreditation of university-run English-language programs. Indeed, they even suggested that the department's unexpected demand that campus programs produce evidence of accreditation during certification reviews or lose their ability to enroll foreign students was "nothing to get upset about." Judging by the reaction of the program directors who crowded an auditorium for an early-morning session at the annual meeting of Nafsa: Association for International Educators, that's unlikely. The controversy arose two weeks ago, when the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, or SEVP, the arm of the department that oversees and enforces the student-visa system, sent a memorandum to colleges and language schools, notifying them that they must show proof of accreditation during spot certification checks. The bulletin took university-run language institutes by surprise because they believed they were exempt from a 2010 law requiring accreditation since they are parts of institutions in good standing with accreditors. Many worried that they would have to obtain separate accreditation, as independent language schools do. Read the full article at http://chronicle.com/article/US-Officials-Fail-to-Allay/132058

Title: State Department Revises Policy on Confucius Institutes
Body: From http://chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/largely-reversing-itself-state-dept-revises-policy-on-confucius-institutes/43612 Largely Reversing Itself, State Dept. Revises Policy on Confucius Institutes May 25, 2012 Seeking to quell controversy on campuses and in China, the U.S. Department of State has reissued a policy directive on Confucius Institutes, largely reversing guidance it put out last week. The department had reaped criticism and confusion after it said that all Chinese schoolteachers sponsored by the university-based language and cultural centers would have to leave the United States by the end of June because of visa problems, a move that Chinese officials said would “harm” Sino-American exchanges. The original directive, first reported in The Chronicle, also stated that the institutes would have to be associated with university foreign-language departments or gain separate accreditation. The revised memorandum states that university accreditation is sufficient and that the precollege teachers will not have to leave the country. It asks host universities to contact the State Department with information about their instructors and says that transition time will be provided to find appropriate groups to sponsor teacher visas. Title: A Harlem Elementary School Offers Arabic Lessons
Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/schoolbook/2012/05/24/a-harlem-elementary-school-makes-arabic-mandatory A Harlem Elementary School Offers Arabic Lessons By Elbert Chu May 24, 2012 The Department of Education shut the Gibran middle school after poor performance and failure to attract enough students. But the principal, parents and staff at Hamilton Heights, a K-5 public school on Amsterdam Avenue started by parents, say their Arabic program will succeed because of parents’ support, financial backing and a broader perspective. “We’re not just about one language or culture,” said Nicky Kram Rosen, principal of the school, also known as P.S. 368. “I’m teaching children how to engage with other cultures.” The principal wanted to offer Arabic to all students partly to help the school earn an International Baccalaureate designation, a set of global education standards. Currently, the 239 students at P.S. 368 can learn Spanish or Mandarin after school. This year, 35 students studied Spanish and 42 studied Mandarin. In March, a small pilot group of 12 students took Arabic classes instead of recess. Starting in the next school year, about 200 P.S. 368 students in second through fifth grade will be able to take Arabic language and culture classes twice a week in 45-minute sessions. They will cover a variety of subjects, including math, science and social studies as well as food, music and art. School administrators said if there was interest and enough resources, the program could be offered to all students. Title: Digital Dictionaries of South Asia
Body: From http://dsal.uchicago.edu/dictionaries The South Asia Language and Area Center at University of Chicago, Columbia University, and the Triangle South Asia Consortium in North Carolina are creating and disseminating electronic dictionaries. For each of the twenty-six modern literary languages of South Asia, a panel of language experts identified key dictionaries currently in print and selected at least one multilingual dictionary for each language. For the more frequently taught languages, a monolingual dictionary also has been chosen. After identifying the best available resources, the chosen dictionaries have been converted to digital formats. Languages in the project are the following: Assamese, Baluchi, Bengali, Divehi, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Khowar, Konkani, Lushai, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Newari, Oriya, Pali, Panjabi, Pashto, Persian, Prakrit, Rajasthani, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, Torwali, Urdu Access the dictionaries at http://dsal.uchicago.edu/dictionaries
