A third section bridging these two eras presents pictures by Cuban photographers who participated in the 1959 Revolution, including Alberto Korda, Perfecto Romero, and Osvaldo Salas. Title: Georgetown College Pilots Spanish Immersion Program
Body: From http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2011/05/24/liberal_arts_college_in_kentucky_experiments_with_spanish_language_immersion_program Socrates in Spanish by Dan Berrett May 24, 2011 In an effort that some are calling the first program of its kind, Georgetown College, a Christian liberal arts college in Georgetown, Ky., is hoping that high interest in foreign languages in K-12 schools can be translated to the postsecondary level. This fall, the 1,300-undergraduate college will welcome its first cohort of 15 students to its Inmersión en Español program. These students still will be able to pursue a major in any of the college's departments, but they will take about one-third of their core requirements in Spanish instead of English. Specifically, five of the courses that are part of Georgetown's Foundations and Core Program will be offered in Spanish. They will include, at first, required courses in critical thinking, literature, philosophy, political science and mathematics. The courses will be taught, in large part, by professors who are versed in both Spanish and the core discipline. Title: Article: Denver Schools, College Team Up To Train Teachers for Linguistically Diverse Classrooms
Body: From http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_18172225 Denver schools, college team up to train teachers for linguistically diverse classrooms By Yesenia Robles May 31, 2011 In its first two years, an innovative "teacher residency" program has placed 55 teachers with special training in hard-to-staff Denver classrooms. All the teachers are trained to teach children for whom English isn't their first language. "We need to make sure we are bringing people on board who are prepared to teach our students," said Thalia Nawi, program director. A partnership between Denver Public Schools and the University of Denver resulted in the Denver Teacher Residency, aimed at bringing a diverse group of teachers into the classroom — while ensuring they are prepared for the diverse students of DPS. The residency program provides teacher licensure, a master's degree and a full year of apprentice teaching with a mentor. Read more: http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_18172225#ixzz1OQHizb2h
