Body: From http://www.nais.org/global/index.cfm?ItemNumber=150365 The NAIS Challenge 20/20 program is an Internet-based international education program that partners schools from the United States with schools from other countries to work together on one of the 20 global problems described by J.F. All schools in the US and all schools in other countries can apply online via the same application form at http://www.nais.org/go/challenge2020 . Schools can submit an application anytime from March to August of each year and all partnerships and announcements will be made by September of each year. Title: Book: Modeling Bilingualism
Body: From http://www.benjamins.com/cgi-bin/t_bookview.cgi?bookid=SiBil%2043 Modeling Bilingualism: From Structure to Chaos In Honor of Kees de Bot Edited by Monika S. Schmid and Wander Lowie Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company Summary: This volume presents an overview of changes in paradigms, perspectives and contexts of research into bilingual development over the past two decades. During this time, the focus of perspective has changed. In the early 1990s, most investigations still proceeded from models that assumed modular components, hierarchical relationships and linear processes, and investigated what were perceived to be the ‘typical’ contexts of bilingual development (sequential, usually instructed bilingualism, where the second language would remain the weaker one and the speakers investigated were typically young adults). More recently it has been proposed that such models may not be complex enough to accommodate bilingual development in all its facets and settings (bimodal bilingualism, attrition, aging). This change has recently culminated in applications of chaos theory to Applied Linguistics, and in the widening range of situations of language acquisition, learning and deterioration which have been investigated. Title: Book: Evaluating Computer-Assisted Language Learning
Body: From http://www.peterlang.com/index.cfm?event=cmp.ccc.seitenstruktur.detailseiten&seitentyp=produkt&pk=54502&concordeid=430145 Evaluating Computer-Assisted Language Learning: An Integrated Approach to Effectiveness Research in CALL by Jonathan Leakey published by Peter Lang International Academic Publishers Summary: Schools, colleges and universities are investing a great deal in the purchase of computer resources for the teaching of modern languages, but whether these resources make a measurable difference to the learning of language students is still unclear. In this book the author outlines the existing evidence for the impact of computers on language learning and makes the case for an integrated approach to the evaluation of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). Drawing on current and past research linked to CALL and e-learning, the author builds a comprehensive model for evaluating not just the software used in language learning, but also the teaching and learning that takes place in computer-based environments, and the digital platforms themselves. This book will be of interest not only to language teachers and CALL researchers, but also to those interested in e-learning and general research methodology, as well as designers of educational software, digital labs, virtual learning environments (VLEs) and institutional budget holders.
