Title: Global Language Educators Network (GLEN) – Ohio
Body: From http://education.ohio.gov/GD/Templates/Pages/ODE/ODEDetail.aspx?Page=3&TopicRelationID=1701&Content=102781 Beginning world language teachers throughout Ohio with two-to-five years of experience are encouraged to join GLEN by registering for the first summer 2011 institute to be held July 5-9 at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. This community of practice is particularly important for rural world language teachers with little local support or for new teachers within a department of seasoned veterans. But hurry! The institute is limited to the first 25 teachers who apply. GLEN is a community of practice consisting of language teachers committed to lifelong professional improvement. A two-year process focused on action research and leadership development initiates teachers into the community. It is sponsored by the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS), Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Foreign Language Association. Title: NCLRC/STARTALK Teacher Training Workshop: Language for Language Teachers: Raising Awareness and Refreshing Knowledge
Body: From http://nclrc.org/profdev/nclrc_inst_pres/startalk2011.html The National Capital Language Resource Center STARTALK 2011 teacher training workshop Language for Language Teachers: Raising Awareness and Refreshing Knowledge June 27 – July 1, 2011 The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. The purpose of this one-week, 40-hour, intensive summer institute is to raise the awareness of K-16 teachers of Arabic as a foreign/second language about the challenges of using the target language in the classroom and refreshing their own knowledge of structural/grammatical rules of Arabic language. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own language knowledge and the delivery styles they apply in classroom instruction. They will examine the degree of suitability to the levels they teach and raise their own awareness of adjusting the target language use to meet the strategies of making their input comprehensible. By the end of the institute, teachers will have a refreshed, explicit understanding of the intricacies of the simple, yet most important, linguistic features of Arabic. They will gain an understanding of how to contextualize structure in standards-based, communication-oriented classroom instruction. Title: James J. Ross Archive of African Images
Body: From http://raai.library.yale.edu/site/index.php?globalnav=about The James J. Ross Archive of African Images presents approximately 5000 pictures of African art published before 1921. RAAI is a collection of rich historical data and images extensively catalogued and annotated. Its historic sources afford exceptional insight into early European and American views - literal and figurative - of Africa's art. Texts are presented here verbatim in the original - often erroneous and sometimes racist - language. Foreign texts appear in English translation followed by the original language. Many images include numerous objects. All individual objects from these "parent" images have been catalogued separately for ease of use and many such objects appear separately in "sub-images." RAAI is available at http://raai.library.yale.edu/site/index.php

Title: Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education To Offer Arabic Online
Body: From http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2011/04/25/pennsylvania_public_higher_education_system_will_offer_fully_online_degrees_in_arabic_and_other_languages Arabic is not a universal language, least of all in Pennsylvania. But by developing a fully online undergraduate degree in Arabic language and culture, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) will soon make Arabic universally available across its 14 colleges and universities — with other online language programs to follow. --- From http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/04/14_state-owned_universities_wi.html Without this type of collaboration, it’s unlikely any of the state universities could draw enough students to offer the advanced courses in Arabic language and culture that are needed for a major. Using this method, all it takes is two or three students at each of the 14 campuses, and “that’s more than most foreign language programs have,” said John Cencich, a professor at California University of Pennsylvania. Read both articles about the new online program at http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2011/04/25/pennsylvania_public_higher_education_system_will_offer_fully_online_degrees_in_arabic_and_other_languages and http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/04/14_state-owned_universities_wi.html
